BANGOR, Maine — A local man whom police describe as a transient was arrested Tuesday after a city policeman saw him drinking in a city park, where alcohol and drugs are strictly prohibited.
Darrell Bowden, 54, was charged with public intoxication and then taken to Penobscot County Jail, according to Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards.
Bowden was released on bail Wednesday, a jail official confirmed.
According to Edwards, the incident that led to Bowden’s arrest happened shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday at Second Street Park, when Bangor police Officer Doug Smith found two men drinking beer in the park and informed them that drinking is prohibited.
“[Bowden] basically told the officer that he’s a 54-year-old and he can drink wherever he wants,” Edwards said.
In his police report, Smith noted that he pointed out two signs warning of the prohibition within clear view before charging Bowden.

Newsflash…homeless people drink in parks all the time. Guess what else…they also sleep there too.
So that makes public drunkenness okay? There is a shelter that takes people with substance abuse issues in Bangor, as well as one that will take you if you are sober. It wouldn’t have mattered if his 500 Class Benz was parked legally, and he was in a tailored italian suit, if your breaking the law, your breaking the law. Consequences for breaking the law are fines and possible jail time. Its not hard to understand why this young generation never takes responsibility for anything and stuff like this is always someone else fault. It won’t change back to the way things used to be unfortunately, and its shameful. You would think someone this mans age would know better, but thats usually never the case anymore.
My point is that this is not newsworthy. I cannot imagine that this instance is so rare that it could not miss being in the news. This happens all the time. Sounds more like an article to fill up space.
Honestly, I kind of wish the paper where full of crap like this instead of all the stabbing, killings, molestation and kiddy porn. I would far rather read about abandoned animals and drunks in the park, instead of articles about women running into phone polls high on drugs with a 7 year old, driving off and hitting another phone poll. I have read some pretty awful things on this website in the last few years, things that were never all that common fifteen or twenty or more years ago. As time goes on the attitude and the slime from the big cities eventually spreads like a virus and it eventually encompasses all. I think we are pretty close to that point my self.
The Bowden family is in the news a lot this week
He should of went over to one of the bars that have outdoor drinking and everything would have been OK
Yes he should have, it’s legal
Thanks for the lesson in legality, Mr. 420.
Your welcome, Mrs.devil
Another tourist visiting the great river city.
At least back in Bangor’s heyday, the transients had to go back to the woods work after their time in the big city.
Now, the city pays them to stay full time.
Darrell grew up in Orrington. Live there most of his life. He’s far from a tourist.
slow news day?? who cares !!!
Bored cop was bored.
This is most certainly newsworthy. Residents in this area have been working hard to make this a better place to raise families. Letting folks know that this behavior is not acceptable and will not be tolerated is something that needs to be shared.
I would think that any respectable adult would appreciate this article and be thankful the laws are being enforced.
Thank you BPD….job well done!
“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”
They must see this on the Statue of Liberty, and immediately head to Bangor.
Why are we such a bum magnet?
Is there a difference between being drunk in public and drinking in public when it comes to the law?
transient ‘s send them back to where they came from Why does it seem that other states are sending them to bangor Maine. With all our state cuts this is just one more thing for the state of maine to take care of .
Orrington? That’s where he came from.
Is Nick Nolte in town?
Finally! Arrest someone drinking in downton Bangor everyday (and you could) for a month or two (and put it in the paper) and they will eventually find somewhere else to go…
Darrell, Darrell, Darrell. When will you ever learn? You are a very nice guy when sober but you, are a nasty drunk. Straighten up and fly right.
You are correct, Darrell is a very nice guy when sober. He is very smart and works very hard when not drinking. He has worked in the woods, worked in construction and does good work as I have seen it.
Darrell was a good friend of my brothers years ago. He has a kind heart and is very nice. Just wish he would stop all the drinking. He was always a hard worker and had a good sense of humor as well. Sad that he can only find solice in a bottle.
I agree with everything you have stated. He was also a friend of our family. As the saying goes “he would give you the shirt off his back.” The bottle has always been his demon. It is a sad thing to see such a talented and caring person finding solace in the bottom of a bottle.
Agreed. Sad indeed.
