HOULTON , Maine — Two Houlton men were arrested Tuesday evening for allegedly possessing pornographic images of minor children on their computers.

Houlton Police Chief Butch Asselin said David B. Copley, 61, and Will Copley, 30, were arrested shortly after 5 p.m. by officers from Houlton Police Department.

The arrests were the result of a lengthy investigation conducted jointly with the Maine Computer Crimes Task Force.

According to Asselin, members of the Houlton Police Department and the Maine Computer Crimes Task Force executed a search warrant at 46 School St. on Aug. 2.

Law enforcement officials seized a laptop, a desktop computer and an external hard drive. Evidence of pornographic images involving minor children were observed on the devices. The digital images allegedly were downloaded by the Copleys using P2P software, which allows computers linked together to form a decentralized network sharing files between users.

Asselin said the identities of the children in the photos are undetermined, but police say they don’t believe local children are involved.

Both men were charged with possession of sexually explicit material of a minor under 12, which is a class C felony. They will appear in court on Sept. 19. A Class C felony is punishable by up to five years in prison and $5,000 in fines.

As a condition of bail, Houlton police have requested the Copleys not be in possession of any electronic devices capable of accessing the Internet.

The Copley residence is located diagonally across from the Greater Houlton Christian Academy.

Two other adults residing at the Copley residence were not charged.

  1. The law should be changed. Five years for a crime like this if convicted is a joke. Just because it is being viewed over the internet it is not a victimless crime. Wan’t David Cropley’s name in the news earlier this year?

  2. i wonder why these two pedophiles LIVED at 46 school street? …oh yeah…they should relocate them to the prison for a long time.

  3. This gets to me.. So many Houlton Citizens hate the HPD.. If it weren’t for them, these jerks would still be on the streets… I say Way to Go HPD.. Keep up the Great Work!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Like father…like son…as parents, our children are supposed to be proud of us and as children we are supposed to be proud of our parents….i guess they can be proud of each other in prison…

  5. GEEEEZE….I’m from Houlton  and went to Central and Lambert schools. The good news here is, they can walk to to the County jail and talk to the people they see behind bars when they’re hanging around the park.

  6. THESE are not Houlton People.  THey are people that happened to land in Houlton to commit their ignorant crime. No doubt for State Aid benefits, they don’t look overly ambitious or trustworthy

    1. Au contraire! They ARE Houlton people; they landed in Houlton over 14 years ago! I know both of these clowns… I shared classes in High School with Will Copley, and David Copley (who IS his dad) was a substitute teacher at HHS if I recall correctly. And yes, that whole family is pretty messed up. All the Copley boys were “the smelly kid” in class, and I would wager that there are very few forks in the family tree. Hate to say it, but they belong to Houlton and didn’t simply just “come to Houlton to commit their crimes”.

  7. Jail is too good for these two.  Bullets are cheaper and the punishment is far more appropriate than jail time.  In jail they get 3 hots and a cot, and they don’t flip the bill for it, us the taxpayers do.  In my opinion, there shouldn’t be a sex offender registry, it should be called the sex offender obituaries.
