HERMON, Maine — A three-vehicle accident on Union Street around 1 p.m. Saturday sent four people to the hospital, Sgt. Bill Birch of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office said from the scene.

The crash, which occurred between Billings Road and Bond Road near Pleasant Hill Campground, still was being reconstructed about 6 p.m.

Birch said that authorities still were conducting interviews and had not yet determined what caused the accident, but it appeared that a white Chevrolet truck driven by Nicholas Mitchell, 21, of Levant rear-ended a maroon Ford Escort driven by Melissa Savage, 55, of Bangor, which sent the car into oncoming traffic. A Nissan truck driven by David Nelson, 64, of Exeter also was involved in the crash.

Mitchell and Savage both were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center, said Birch. Mary Savage, 83, of Bangor, who was a passenger in her daughter Melissa’s vehicle, also was taken to EMMC, as was Joan DiNatale, 52, of Exeter, who was traveling in the Nissan truck.

Birch said that he was not sure how badly any of the motorists were injured.

Two of the three vehicles were totaled, the sergeant said.

  1. Open up with
“A two- or three-vehicle collision” then later say
“One car remained in the roadway and another one was in the ditch.” Grabbing my calculator here (Hey maybe someone counted on their fingers, just sayin’) that is 2 cars accounted for at the scene of the collision. Therefore it sounds like this is a two car collision and not a two or three….did someone count one of the vehicles twice?

Edit: I do see the update now, the BDN has done what they know best, publish first (like there is some race to be the media outlet winning a prize for breaking a news story) guess at something, then actually go back and get the facts and publish them. I was apparently caught in the middle of that race with my post

    1. Prob’ly both of these are blaming ” the one that fled the scene” —— “Honest, officer, it wasn’t MY fault”……

    2. The version of the article I’m reading say 3, andclearly describes them all. I’m guessing that not enough info was collected when the story was first reported, which gave the uncertainty you read.

      1. The story indicates it has been updated after 6PM to update the car count to three, considering the quote I presented the verbiage was there in the past 5 hours (from the time of this post) that was the version I had at the time of my original post

        1. When I made my post (2 hours after your first one) it had been updated. I wasn’t trying to insult you with my original comment. I was saying I was reading a different version than you had, and the question of the number of cars wasn’t a question any longer.

          1. Didn’t say you was insulting me nor felt that way, it is just apparent the BDN decided to fail at being newsworthy decided to publish first, speculate, and then go back and get the facts  then update the story after my post. I should learn this happens quite often on this site to many people.

          2. I would have settled for “section of Unions Street closed due to crash, Traffic detoured, blah blah, we will post more details when it becomes available” I just could not believe that they had to start off with not knowing if it was 2 or three cars but account for 2 cars. This is almost like “Wheres Waldo” except for we are looking for a third car. The crappy journalism one reads sometimes.

    3. A Chevy Truck, A Ford Escort, and a Nissan Pick up. 3 vehicles. No teens. A 21 year old, a 55 year old and a 64 year old.

      1. See the time stamps of when the article was posted, observe my quote is now gone and notice that none of the vehicles descriptions were included at that time, otherwise I wouldn’t have bothered making my post if that had been the case. Apparently the BDN was in the middle of trying to be breaking news and failed at it with lack of details.

        1. I wasn’t being nasty, just informative. That’s why I made my post. So sorry that you took offense. Oh well, remind me never to try to be helpful again.

          1. I am not being nasty but if you like me to I can, I have no problem with it. Considering I cited a direct quote present at the time of the article and the amount of time I made my comment and you make yours and my quote I cite is no longer there wouldn’t one think the article has been updated in the meantime? Let’s take a look at the time stamp, ah yes gee it was.
I was nice to the last person who made a similar comment but if you want to come out and assume I took offense then maybe I should just tell you to read next time, read if it had been updated in the few hours you come aboard to make a comment to something.
I just get a kick out of people who just shoot from the hip around here and assume everything
Make one comment about something I read and quote from and all the sudden I get journalist wannabes thinking I made it up…..of course when I come back to the article I will see the update, heck I even updated my original post and I still got people trying to take me to the gallows over a quote that is no longer in the story

          1. why dont you keep things relevant to the story. What he did in high school has nothing to do this story. Bringing that up just makes you another person on here babbling about things that have no reason to be brought up.

          2. Yeah im innocent “i was just the driver” sounds more a personal vendetta then information that is related to the story. i didnt see a “hope the injured have a fast recovery” nope just here tryingto bash people because they caught you “not breaking any laws”

          3. again, who cares….  Police officers are people just like the rest of us and I am sure many have made just as many poor decisions as the rest of us.   Being a “cop”  is a job or career choice.  You dont have to be a genius or a saint to be hired in that line of work.

  2. Another 3 car crash caused by a rear ending pickup?  Wasn’t there another one of these in Bangor just a couple days ago?

  3. my mother and step dad was involved in this accident and yes there where 3 vechicals in this accident people should watch there sarcacism though and be thankful it wasent ur family involved!!!!!

  4. It must be a boring news day.  For Pete’s sake it was an accident that any of us could have been involved in.   Just be careful!   I travel over an hour to work 3 days / week  and encounter drivers texting/phoning, putting on makeup, reading a map…….  No matter how stressful my day, I’m always super cautious because I want to get home in one piece.  Take your time.   Think about the time wasted in a hospital that you could be spending w/family and friends.  Life is too short.

  5. Whatever is involved, i truly pray that all involved in this accident will be ok.  I would also like to know why there has not been ANYTHING about the accident in Brewer right near the old Granville Lumber.  That accident happend on Friday evening and held traffic up for a very long time.  As my wife and I drove by the scene, there was a sheet in the window which led us to believe it must have involved a fatality…Cmon BDN, get on the ball and find out what happened here…Havent seen one thing on the local news stations about it either.  Did this involve another very important person driving drunk and its being covered up or what?…This is the second time this has happened that i can recall.  The other one was on Broadway at the four corners near Kev-Lan.
