SKOWHEGAN, Maine — Officials with the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office are warning the public of a telephone scam going on throughout the state.

The sheriff’s office has received numerous reports over the last several days of citizens who have received telephone calls in which the caller has identified himself as Sheriff Barry DeLong or other sheriff personnel, Detective Matthew Cunningham said in a news release.

The callers went on to request confidential personal identity information under the auspices of an official police investigation, according to the release. The caller solicited or demanded donations, contributions and payments.

“These calls and callers are not in any way connected to the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department or the sheriff himself,” Cunningham said in the release. “This is a scam.”

Police are advising the public to keep debit and credit card information safe, identify someone before giving out personal information and never send money to anyone you don’t know or trust.

Those with questions or concerns should contact the sheriff’s office at 800-452-1933 or your local police department.

  1. Some dirt bags will cross any line to avoid a real job. I got an unsolicited “sales” call on my cell phone the other day. A number that is listed on the do not call list. They used some lame excuse that they sent me some junk mail and were just “following up” on that important correspondence. I guess we can thank the dim wits in Washington for leaving those little loopholes in the do not call laws.

  2. Card services always calls people to tell them their credit card rate is too high and they can lower it. I don’t have a credit care. It’s an automated system that will tell you to press 9 to speak to someone. Press 9 and tell the person that answers that you do not have a credit card and they get pessed, nasty and down right mean.
