3-vehicle Robbinston crash sends 9 to hospital

ROBBINSTON, Maine — A three-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon on Route 1 sent nine of the 11 people involved to a Calais hospital for treatment, a Maine State Police trooper said Thursday night.

All nine of the victims were treated at Calais Regional Hospital and released later in the day, according to Trooper Staci Carpenter.

She credited the fact that everyone involved was wearing a seat belt and that airbags in all of the vehicles deployed with preventing what could have been worse injuries.

Carpenter said the accident happened shortly before 1 p.m., when a northbound Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Maynard Marshall, 51, of Eskasoni, Nova Scotia, crossed the centerline and traveled into the path of a southbound Chevrolet pickup driven by Rachel Beal, 38, of Pembroke, who despite pulling over to the edge of the roadway was unable to avoid a collision.

The impact from that crash spun Beal’s pickup into the path of a Chevrolet SUV driven by Dorothy Marshall, 38, also of Eskasoni, Nova Scotia, who was following Maynard Marshall, her cousin, Carpenter said.

Taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries, including bumps, bruises and cuts, were: Maynard Marshall and his 18-year-old son, Rick Marshall; Beal and her two passengers, a boy and a girl whose names were withheld because of their ages; and Dorothy Marshall, two male minors, one of which was her son, and one minor female.

The other two minors in Dorothy Marshall’s vehicle, both of them females, were not injured, Carpenter said.
