PORTLAND, Maine — An inmate at Cumberland County Jail being held on theft charges allegedly tried to hang himself with his bed sheet Thursday morning, according to the county sheriff’s office.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department announced Thursday afternoon it is investigating the incident, in which inmate Lawrence Cox allegedly fashioned a noose from his bed sheet, tied it around his neck and then attached it to the top bunk in his cell.
Corrections Officers Deborah DeVou and Christopher Phillips arrived on the scene at approximately 7:30 a.m., released Cox from the noose and moved him to the jail’s medical unit for treatment, according to the sheriff’s department statement.
“Inmate Cox was awake and alert on his way to medical,” the sheriff’s office’s Thursday release states, in part. “There is no documentation showing any past history of self-harm. As well, there have been no requests made to the jail medical services for mental health services by inmate Cox prior to this incident.”
Cox is being held on theft charges with bail set at $2,560, according to the release.

I think that if an inmate at any correctional facility wishes to end their life, they should be allowed to do so.
Just get them to sign a release first to exonerate the State, oounty or municipality so their reletives can’t come back and sue. If we are a “free conutry” one should be free to say they have had enough, and check out.
So true….
i agree..
Anyone should be able too. Not just inmates. Have a waiting period to make sure that’s what they really want, and then let them end it in their own terms. The people that really want to will do it anyway, why not give them some dignity.
you really dont understand what it is like to be incarcerated do you . he may have asked to speak to someone but simply ignored. especially if this was his first time. some people who are clastrophobic especially . they put you in a holding cell first when they put you through processing solitary confinment . if you behave the processing goes faster and gradually you are allowed more rewards like a hour in the day room that telephone call to loved ones you have to call collect though though . if you are behaved you earn work privilages . it takes awhile but when you first get processed it is not pleasant. if he had drug issues that would make it worse
Wow i been there and you make it sound like hell its more like cupcake jail
