WATERVILLE, Maine — An Oakland man with a lengthy rap sheet is facing terrorizing and criminal mischief charges after threatening a teenager who was fishing on a dock, according to police.
The 15-year old boy was enjoying an afternoon of fishing on the Water Street boat launch Monday afternoon when Stephen Ames, 49, drunkenly began making threats, Waterville Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey said.
The teen’s mother and their two dogs were watching nearby from the woman’s vehicle when the suspect approached the car, Rumsey said.
“She warned [Ames] to stay away,” Rumsey said.
Ames ignored the warnings, and when the dogs started barking at him, he shook a can of beer, opened it and sprayed it all over the woman’s car and one of the dogs, according to Rumsey.
When the teenager intervened, Ames threatened to kill him, according to Rumsey. The teen jumped in his mother’s car, and they sped away and dialed 911.
Police quickly arrived at the scene and took Ames into custody, Rumsey said. He was booked on charges of terrorizing and criminal mischief and taken to the Kennebec County Jail.
Ames’ criminal history, which spans several police departments in central Maine, Rumsey said, includes convictions of criminal trespass, assault, disorderly conduct and operating under the influence.
Ames faces up to a year behind bars on each charge if convicted. He is due in court Nov. 6.
