PRESQUE ISLE – Henry O. Akeley Jr., 89, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012 at a Presque Isle health care facility. He was born Oct. 3, 1922, in Presque Isle, son of Henry and Myrtle (White) Akeley Sr.
He enjoyed riding horses as a child, was involved in horse showing, and raised baby beef taking 1st place one year at the fair. He worked with his father on a dairy farm, which he later owned for a number of years. Henry worked 35 years as a custodian and bus driver for MSAD No. 1. He donated hundreds of hours as a volunteer in his later years, visiting the shut-ins, giving rides or just being a friend. One of his fondness memories is when he traveled to the Holy Land with a group from Presque Isle Wesleyan Church and was baptized in the River Jordan.
He is survived by two sons, Dale and his wife, Anne, of Harpswell, Steven and his wife, Rebecca, of Damariscotta; a daughter, Carla Cyr and her husband, Mike, of Presque Isle; seven grandchildren, one great grandchild. He was predeceased by four brothers, Clifton, Paul, Bernard and Carroll; three sisters, Catherine Estey, Eleanor Condon and Althea Berry.
Friends may call 1-2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Ron Chaffee officiating. Interment will be at Fairmount Cemetery. Donations may be made in his memory to Aroostook Agency on Aging, 1 Edgemont Drive, Presque Isle, ME 04769.
