PITTSFIELD and ORIENT – Debra Hannigan, 61, died Aug. 19, 2012, at a Boston hospital. She was born Sept. 24, 1950, in Houlton, daughter of Bernard G. and Dorothy (Robinson) Hannigan.
Debra devoted her career to children as a teacher and special education director. She was state director for Child Development Services until her retirement. She established an alternative education program and a preschool program in SAD 53. She earned recognition as MADSEC Special Education Director of the Year, participated in a sister-state agreement between Maine and Aomori, Japan, and organized and led student trips to Japan. She loved her involvement in the preservation of East Grand Lake as a member and former president of CLIC, and a Woodie Wheaton Land Trust board member. Debra was an avid reader, skier and traveler. She loved spending time at East Grand Lake. She had an infectious smile and was hardworking. Most of all, she was a loving mother, supportive sister and dedicated friend.
Debra is survived by her daughter, Sarah Allen and husband, Stephen, of Pittsfield; son, Matthew Houston of Pittsfield; three sisters, Cobina Hannigan of Dallas, Carole Desjardins and husband, Paul, of Yarmouth, and Byrnalyn Miller and husband, Richard, of Standish; several beloved nephews and one niece. She was predeceased by her parents.
Friends may call 11 a.m. until time of service noon Saturday at Dunn Funeral Home, 11 Park St., Houlton. Interment will be at Orient Cemetery.
