ETNA, Maine — A Bangor woman escaped serious injury after her car left Interstate 95 Tuesday morning.
Meghan Olson, 29, was heading southbound near the Etna-Dixmont exit when she lost control of her vehicle, Maine State Police Trooper Michael Johnston said.
Olson lost control when her Nissan Versa began to drift toward the median, the trooper said, and she overcorrected and went off into the median and struck several trees.
Olson complained of arm pain at the scene but was otherwise not injured, Johnston said. She was taken by ambulance to Eastern Maine Medical Center for an evaluation.
Johnston said it’s not clear what caused Olson to lose control, and she wasn’t sure when police interviewed her.
“In my experience people just don’t drift off the road for no reason,” said Johnston.
Olson told police she wasn’t distracted by a cellphone or the radio in the vehicle.
The car was totaled in the crash.

True, usually a distraction is involved. So by concluding one drifted off the road we can rule out potential mechanical problems then?
Olson told police she wasn’t distracted by a cellphone or the radio in the vehicle.
Ah, OK so how did someone “drift” off the road then? I bet you called in a ride for her then?
Methadone makes people drift off. Just saying.
GW made her do it.
Worked with her that morning – she saved a life. Thanks for assuming it’s methadone, jerk.
Of course she wasn’t distracted. It’s against the law to drive distracted. Same as asking a drunk driver if they have been drinking. Go figure.
Good point. If ever in an accident and asked what happened, best to say nothing.
Man I hate those cars that drift off the road for no reason.
Turn the cell phone towers off for a week, and I bet the accident statistics go way down.
a pretty good idea, in theory… but is quite impractical.
Mandate that a short range signal blocker be installed and working in all motor vehicles.
Also impractical. What if there is an emergency and the driver is unable to get out to dial away from the vehicle?
getting warmer.. this would be very expensive, and could take a long time to implement. Also, you’d have to come up with a device that only filters out radio waves with a certain range of frequencies, and lets through radio waves for the car’s stereo system (AM, FM).
Then, there’s the case where someone is in an accident, trapped in their vehicle, and needs to call for help.
The time of morning wasn’t given, but she might’ve dozed off before she drifted off.
around noon
Anyone ever notice how many accidents there are on that stretch of Interstate? Cars just fall off the road from Etna to Hermon….
That stretch of interstate isn’t any better or worse then the rest of it. I live in Winterport.
perhaps it is because it is the most boring stretch of highway south of Bangor in the entire country.
you ever drive from Old Town to Houlton?
yes, several times.. that’s why I said it is the most boring stretch of highway *south of Bangor*
Sounds like highway hypnosis.
can you hear me now?
cell phone probably……here is something that might deter the use of them an texting…..when the police investigate the accident, and pull cell phone records to see if it was in use, the insurance companies should start to deny claims for auto accidents when phone is being used or texting or in this case, paying off a newer car that is probably totaled and related to some cell phone issue…..
First the guy in Clifton flips his car backing into his driveway, how into heck is that possible?
Now this lady…..Pay attention people.
Thank god for airbags. That would’ve been a much worse result w/o them. Regarding going off the road…..er, I’ve been distracted before, just sayin’.
I used to drive to and from Boston every week for my job, leaving late Sunday or early Monday and returning on Friday night to early Saturday. On many occasions I could have used a distractio. Endless miles of nothing doesn’t lend itself to vigilance but just the opposite. I can see how this might have happened. I used to pull into rest areas and stretch or walk to try to keep myself alert.
Was the median hurt?
it is possible that she was drifting towards the middle of the highway and then just over corrected to quickly and lost control..More then likely im guessing it was a cell phone but you never know..going that fast and over correcting couldve lead to her crashing..
Lucky girl hope a lesson was learned —-
Unless you were there or saw it happen, then everything you think you know, you dont!!
So dont assume!! Thats whats wrong with this world today, rather think a negative then a positive!! What if it was you, or a loved one, would you be saying the same thing?? Just stick to well wishes and be happy that someone didn’t lose their child that day!!
