BANGOR, Maine — A man who was stopped by Bangor police because he fit the description of a burglary suspect literally ran out of his shoes and hat.
He also ran out of luck, as he was eventually tripped by a bystander while being chased by police officers and arrested Monday evening.
“Apparently this guy fit the description of a burglary suspect from earlier in the shift, so Officer David Farrar approached him to talk to him, and the guy failed to stop or cooperate,” said Bangor police Sgt. Larry Webber.
The man — 20-year-old Vernon Levesque of Bangor — stopped after being asked a second time and walked toward Farrar’s police cruiser, but then became belligerent, Webber said.
“He started yelling that everything was BS and wouldn’t cooperate. He was also asked to keep his hands out of his pockets, but he wouldn’t comply,” Webber said.
After Farrar told him he was under arrest, Levesque started running away. A foot chase ensued, but eventually Levesque stopped running and turned around to face his pursuer, Webber said.
“The guy finally stopped and got aggressive. He was making fists so the officer Maced him, but that didn’t stop him,” Webber continued. “He jumped over a small fence and got to Coe Park, but he lost his shoes. Then he started down Court Street, but a citizen saw what was happening and blocked the guy’s path.”
Levesque fell onto the grass. Farrar and Officer Dennis Townsend, who was following in a cruiser, grabbed him on a nearby playground and — after a brief tussle — put him in handcuffs and arrested him for refusal to submit to arrest or detention and disorderly conduct.
Officers picked up Levesque’s shoes, his hat — which fell to the ground during the tussle — and also found a glass pipe after searching him.
Levesque turned out not to be the suspect for a car burglary in the Abbott Square parking lot earlier in the day.
“He could have saved himself a lot of hassle and money if he’d just cooperated,” Sgt. Tom Reagan said Tuesday.
Levesque was taken to the Penobscot County Jail, where he was processed and held overnight Monday. He posted $60 bail early Tuesday and is scheduled for arraignment at Penobscot Judicial Center on Wednesday.

I chuckled when I read that too. I got to thinking though, that it kinda makes sense, it would keep him from pulling a weapon, if he had one in there.
I understand the why, I was just questioning the way the sentence was written so poorly. lol

$60 bail? I bet taxpayers paid more then that to chase the guy, arrest him, transport him, process him.
