SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — South Portland police are investigating after a woman said she left her $10,000 diamond engagement ring in a city tanning salon.
Elise Cassidy says she took off the nearly two carat ring during a recent tanning session, then forgot to put it back on before she left. When she returned to the salon a short time later, the ring was gone.
Cassidy, who’s getting married in a few weeks, says she was “heartbroken.”
Police told WGME-TV that they are looking into the possibility that an employee at Sun Tan City took the ring. Police say no other clients used the booth after Cassidy and one employee took an unusually long break soon after Cassidy left. Sun Tan City officials had no comment.

Sad story and all, but it is silly to me that a little rock and some metal can be worth that much…
Diamonds are the biggest ripoff going.
They’re not rare at all.
Blood Diamonds.
I would assume she has insurance?
10k for a ring is crazy.
Insurance or not, its the sentimental value. I am recently engaged, and this would be devestating. I pray she gets her ring back.
Agreed. I’ve been married nearly 20 years and I would still be crushed if mine were lost.
So you’d keep a close eye on it?
Would she still marry if the ring was 1/2 carot..
It isn’t the size of the stone, it’s the quality that upps the price. 1/2 stone caret can be worth more than the 2 caret stone.
Why in the world you wear a 2 carat ring to a tanning salon?
Better yet, why would you go to a tanning salon? Your health would be in less jeopardy working on the State Police Bomb Squad.
That’s true. Remember tanning Mom.
Folks don’t realize that skin cancer is the most common form of this deadly disease. Over 2,000,000 cases of various skin cancers are found every year in the US. Losing a ring won’t kill you-but being blasted in these tanning spas can-and does. Go to a party in Florida with a bunch of seniors. Band-aids everywhere-with a variety of dermatology stories.
So true. Why go to the electic beach anyhow? You tan just as well or as bad spending time outside.
I have no idea why they’ve not been outlawed.
Of the cases reported, only a small precentage have reported ONLY indoor tanning. Dermatologists have paid BIG money to have the “scary” numbers published everywhere. The real information is in lesser known articles…you just have to look. You also may be interested in the numerous diseases that are much more prevalent in northern states due to lack of vitamin D. Supplements are prescribed heavily and doctors encourage UV exposure.
“Tanning Mom” has been exposed already. She over used body builder stain and bronzers. If you see all the videos/pictures, her skin changed color in every one!
Why would she need to remove it? Who is going to see her tan mark? Unless, she is not wearing her ring.(why would that be?) How vain. I have never heard of UV or the similar harmful to diamonds.Appears to me an insurance scam.
If it were me, I wouldn’t want a 2 carat ring in the first place. I have never heard of uv rays doing harm to a diamond either but, it can do damage to your skin.
I know for me, in the past, when I have misplaced my rings it is because I have taken them off to put on lotion. It is very possible she was applying a tanning lotion of some sort and removed it so the ring wouldn’t get all “gooped up”. I have lost at least one ring this way, as it was wrapped in a paper towel after I had to wash it because I forgot to take it off before putting on lotion. I was distracted by my nephew running for the bathroom because he was sick; and that same towel was then thrown in the trash (and taken to the local dump) before I realized it was missing. So, don’t automatically assume the worst of her…
She’ll have a much more serious problem on her hands if she continues tanning at those salons. Indoor tanning is linked to skin cancer in a big way.
Actually, the benefits from tanning far outweigh the risks. Over exposure is what causes skin damage and MAY lead to an increased risk of skin cancer. Indoor tanning provides the same UV exposure as natural sun and many doctors actually encourage RESPONSIBLE tanning for vitamin D production and many skin conditions. Many of the studies have been skewed as the participants weren’t questioned on their outdoor exposure. The key is responsible tanning…indoor and out and avoiding over exposure! If you do some research you may be surprised at what find…
Which peer reviewed studies stated tanning beds in moderation is healthy?
Who cares what it was worth or if she should be tanning or not? If you find something, it’s not yours to keep. All these places have lost and founds. Have some decency and hand it over. Doesn’t matter if it’s from a gum machine or Tiffany’s. It could mean something to someone.
scam
Dont worry dear, I will buy you another…
“She’ll have a much more serious problem on her hands if she continues tanning at those salons. Indoor tanning is linked to skin cancer in a big way.”
This is worth repeating — not that anyone will listen.
A good friend of mine who was a lifeguard on the Jersey shore had most of his nose cut off because in his younger days he got too much sun.
One of the biggest causes of skin cancer is the thoughtless folks who compliment their friends on their “healthy looking tan.”
About the only part of my body I’ve exposed to the sun for over 50 years are my hands, my ears and my nose. And a couple of years ago the end of my nose was removed by a surgeon because for many years it got too much sun.
Kids will tell you that having a sick part of your nose removed only happens to old people. They don’t intend to get old.
The humble Farmer
I had a chunk of my forehead and the top of my right ear removed this spring. I then had to chemically peel my face with stuff called Efudex. It was like walking around with a third degree burn on your face for a month. I guess my insistence on working out side with my hands for my whole life is not without a cost. I use sunscreen now. A tanning bed and a coffin are one and the same to me.
Working or spending time outside for many hours at a time will do damage to your skin. No matter how small the exposure sight is, it must be protected from overexposure. I am sorry that you have had to endure surgeries, but it is wrong to lump repeated overexposure in with tanning responsibly.
Stupid to take it off in the first place! Who removes their engagement ring in public!!!!!
Check the local pawn shops.
She probably had insurance…..and planned this to get a check. I smell fraud.
Groom to be– take warning.
the tanning salon personal clean the beds between clients, just saying
It’s not about the tanning but rather the ring. There was a time when you fond something which doesn’t belong to you, you would turn it in to lost and found etc. Now days, people find something someone lost and they think it’s OK for them to keep. What has this world come to?
Just today, a teenage friend of mine found $200 and a Kindle in the street. She found the name of the person it belonged to on the Kindle and she returned both to the owner! I was very proud of her!
That’s what I’m talking about! Not all people are dishonest or don’t care. As a society we must train others to care and do the right thing. The person returning what she found to its owner has character!!!!!!!!
First of all….doesn’t matter if she was tanning…it’s her business if she tans…I’m sure everyone has some sort of bad habit. Secondly, I happen to know this girl and for those of you passing judgement….shame on you. Thirdly the thief is pretty stupid if they think they won’t get caught.
If i had a ring of that cost, it would locked in a safe, not sitting on my finger or taken off at a public place….pretty ridiculous to spend that kind of money on jewelry!!
I do agree that it should have been handed in, but honesty is hard to find now days…hope it gets returned!
Something does not RING true.
Girl – if you’re getting married in a few weeks to a guy who shelled out $10,000 for a diamond ENGAGEMENT ring, YOU DO NOT NEED A TAN! Just keep on doing whatever you were doing before … he’ll buy you another ring sweetheart!
not necessarily true. He may well have saved for years for that ring. Perhaps he could only pay half in cash, and the other half he financed. Just because someone paid 10k doesn’t mean they are rich.
Tanning is a personal choice. Right , wrong or indifferent. Maybe a small reward will help her get the ring back….just saying.
Whomever found this ring better be careful of their next steps. Keeping something that isn’t yours will only make you miserable for a long time.
Who cares, we live in eastern Maine.
Any man who spends 10k on a friggin ring ought to have his head examined..Anything over a 1/2 a karat is too much if you ask me..I wouldnt spend more then 1k on a engagement ring..Call me cheap but thats just how I feel..and my wife is plenty happy..i guess its all in who the person is..I hope she finds her ring and isnt just trying to collect the insurance $$ providing she had the insurance..
