CLINTON, Maine — The death last month of a 3-month-old girl who was staying with a baby sitter is being investigated as a homicide, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Wednesday.

Maine State Police are investigating the case in conjunction with the state medical examiner’s office, he said. Brooklyn Foss-Greenaway died July 8 while under the care of a baby sitter in Fairfield, according to The Associated Press.

No charges have been filed, the AP said.

“We’ve been investigating the death since July. Now we’re investigating it as a homicide,” said McCausland. “Other details as to where we are in the investigation, we’re not going to talk about publicly.”

The death of any child under age 3 automatically triggers an investigation.

The baby’s parents live in Clinton and had arranged for the child to spend the night at the baby sitter’s Fairfield home, according to the AP.

Emergency officials arrived just six minutes after receiving a call in the early morning hours that the child was unresponsive and not breathing.

  1. How awful for the parents. I truly hope that this is not a homicide. Anyone who could hurt an infant is obviously deeply disturbed and disturbing. Rest in peace, Brooklyn.

    1. The parents may be responsible.  It can sometimes take hours for a young child with a closed head injury to become unresponsive.  In a case like that, the sitter could have been set up to take the fall for someone who had the care of the child 18 hours earlier.

      1. I agree, and I know of cases where the sitter has been the fall guy. If that is the case, it is still awful for the parents, because they have to live with themselves.

          1. Well, there are some people who can do the most awful things to others and live with it quite easily. They are usually lack a conscience. Or if they have one, they hide it really well.

  4. I hope they figure this out soon and bring the person responsible to trail to pay for this unforgivable crime.

  5. This is so terribly sad. There is so much death and Violence going on in this state in recent years. What in the world has happened to our society? I hope this beautiful child rests in peace and Condolences to her family.

    1. The State should consider adding wings onto our State Pen and our prisons, reserved just for baby and child killers. These wings could be named the Gordon Collins-Faunce Wing.
