SKOWHEGAN, Maine — A local woman was arrested early Saturday morning for being intoxicated while allowing a permitted juvenile to drive, according to Skowhegan Police Deputy Chief Dale Lancaster.
Skowhegan police were called to a Family Circle apartment at 1:43 a.m. Saturday to investigate a dispute between the occupants of the house and people who came to the residence. They were fighting over a male, said Lancaster.
A vehicle had left the property before police arrived. After questioning people at the apartment, police were able to find and stop the vehicle six minutes later on West Front Street.
Behind the wheel of the 2006 Chevrolet Malibu was a 16-year-old girl who had a driver’s permit.
In the passenger seat was Melanie Monk, 39, of Skowhegan. Monk is the mother of the juvenile’s friend.
“She appeared to be intoxicated,” Lancaster said Wednesday, adding that she tested at twice the legal alcohol limit.
Monk was arrested and charged with accompanying a motor vehicle permittee while impaired, a Class E misdemeanor.
“You cannot be intoxicated and be the licensed person overseeing the person on their [driver’s] permit,” said Lancaster.
Monk was taken to Somerset County Jail in Madison on Saturday and bailed out the same day. She is scheduled to appear in Skowhegan District Court on Nov. 21.

Well even though she broke the law, at least she didn’t drive drunk and endanger everyone else on the road.
Lesser of two evils for sure.
I agree. She did the stupidly smart thing…if that makes any sense.
It does. Some small part of the brain was working.
A little cheesy!!!!!!
Not a very good role model for her daughter and her daughters’ friend who was driving.
Must be the order of Allens coffee brandy Monks.
I suspect the juvenile is more mature than this woman is. However, it was the lesser of two evils in this circumstance.
Did the kid get charged? Must have known the lady was drinking and still drove with a permit?
Wait, what? You expect the student driver to give the adult a field sobriety test?
I guess so…LOL
No but must have known Just saying you need to be responsible for your actions . permitted driver should know if adult is licensed . No excuses it just a kid. If it is just a kid maybe they are not ready for a permit to drive. Twice the legal limit yes the kid new the lady was drinking. Driving without a licensed driver .
Maybe the kid thought this lady would drive no matter what. I’m not saying it’s right, but I agree with most others here–better to have an inexperienced driver behind the wheel than a drunk driver.
Absolutelyl You are 100% correct. the teen should have walked away and allowed the woman to drve drunk. That’s what you would do right?
I feel so sorry for young people today. Damned if they do, and damned twice if they do not.
I give credit to the juvenile in this case for NOT letting the drunk woman drive in her condition. The juvenile may have saved someone’s life. Seems the juvenile had more sense then the adult.
Maybe the teen driver was trying to break up the fight over a guy by removing one of the squabblers.
The Family Circle is a huge,neighborhood-sized welfare housing complex. So you have late night/early morning parties, drinking, fighting, juveniles driving drunks, utilization of limited taxpayer town resources, the police department.. No one is going to work in the morning. No one is going to Church in the morning. Family Circle is also where a majority of the fireworks are going off in town.
If you have taxes taken out of your paycheck, here is a classic example of how it is being spent.
Now the police were called to the residence because of a dispute between two occupants. I just am not quite clear on why they went after the Monk’s car, Monk had aready left. There has to be a few details missing here.
Details missing in the BDN? Tell me it ain’t so. Lol People will still judge. Such love.
Can we have a picture of the man they were fighting over. was it a arguement of a cat fight?? Please BDN embellish the story for us, it makes for great comments.
I would rather watch the video. lol.
Vision covered in tattoos, slurred speak, well known at the county jail, and only gets drunk 5 days a week and not 7 days. That is considered a ‘good catch’ male in Skowtown.
Another winner!
