BANGOR, Maine — A small motorized scooter was hit on the Penobscot Bridge Saturday afternoon and the mo-ped’s driver was taken from the scene to a local hospital.

The collision occurred at about 1:45 p.m. and closed the bridge for a short amount of time as firefighters and paramedics tended to the injured person and police officers conducted interviews with witnesses.

The bridge reopened to traffic within 20 minutes.

The name and condition of the driver were not available.

  1. No matter what you’re on – a moped or a lobster boat – a collision is always a threat. Here’s hoping the injuries weren’t severe.

  2. People, be aware of other vehicles on the road please. The life you save maybe someone you love. You  just never know.

    1. True, but unfortunately we’re in an “all about me” society.  If someone wants to text and drive and they hit a pedestrian or a cyclist, then tough.  They have this “sucks to be you” attitude.
Throw the *&^& book at the self-centered “me first” drivers.

    1. And, if you can’t obey the speed limits and show a little courtesy, then you should be off the road, too.

The roads belong to autos, trucks, bicyclists, runners, mo-peds, motorcyclists. Yes, and even horses.  Speeders don’t own the roads.

Share.  Just because the sign says “60” doesn’t mean you have to drive the maximum.  Slow down. Save gas and lives.

  3. As a licensed motorcyclist of 17+ years the problem with mopeds in general is that they are MORE dangerous than a full sized motorcycle based on the smaller machine/lower height.  This further increases the likelihood that a moped will not be “seen” by drivers of 4 wheeled vehicles.

To make matters worse I would estimate 80% of the moped operators I see in Bangor area do NOT wear helmets (possibly because they mistakenly assume the slower max speed of a moped makes them “safer”).

    1. It’s one thing to say a moped is dangerous. It’s another thing to say riding a moped is dangerous. The two statements are not synonymous.

  4. Last two comments are correct!  It is NOT a moped – a moped would have pedals.  This is a scooter, 49cc, capable of 35 mph, maybe 40 mph down a steep hill.  Hope the operator is OK,  we’ll be seeing more scooters as gas prices continue to rise under Obama!

    1. POTUS does not control gas prices, genius!  Never has. Even with George Bush, it was the people around him in the oil business who benefited most.

If you want to point a possible finger, look to Wall Street and the so called ‘oil speculators’.

This is pretty basic stuff and high time you started paying rapt attention to the facts and stop listening to Fox News.

Seriously, Man. You are dangerously uninformed.

      1. You listen to whatever news channel you want, and what’s with the dictating for others to “stop” listening to whoever they want!  Last I knew this is still a free Country.  We all have our likes and dislikes.  And seriously dwneast, you are truely uninformed!  I can find all the same news that Fox has even if it’s buried deep.  So, check it out first before you tell others not to do.

  5. Scooters are indeed gaining in Popularity, it is difficult to see and judge them at all times. But why bring Politics into the equation as under Bush, the gas prices soared, also. There was no mention of Bush buying 100,000 acres of oil land in Paraguay before he left office, suppose that was like insider trading ?  People need to research, review and absorb before making unfounded statements. The real truth is that the Chinese are all owning cars now opposed to a few years ago, there are 2 major refinery fires going on and two thirds of the oil rigs in the gulf shut down because of the storm. Most people that I speak with are sick over our outdated political system and the parties. It doesn’t work anymore, no one should be able to buy the presidency. All the money that is being spent could be going into the coffers to help , America. I would like to see us move on to a draft and selection of the best people in the land to run the USA and a system that doesn’t employ political favors but one of merit.

  6. I owned a moped once many years ago (It didn’t have pedals, but that’s what we called them back then).  Thought it would be a great way to get back and forth to work and save gas since I lived out in the country.  I didn’t own it very long.  Never got hurt on it and stayed on the side of the road as best I could so I wouldn’t hold up traffic, but so many vehicles who whizzed past me came way too close for comfort.  Too scary for me.

  7. That is not a moped. That is a scooter. Mopeds have pedals. The word moped is a combination of motor and pedal…moped, get it?

  8. Which is meant by ‘the Penobscot Bridge’.

Nearest to State Street in Bangor and running between ‘the Twin Cities’?

Heads up – there IS the Princess of potholes from  Hell in the right lane, toward Brewer, that’s been
    neglected for quite a while.

    Fix it!

  9. With a follow-up story stating that no collision occurred, it would behoove the paper to attach a correction to this story.
