Bowing to growing pressure from thirsty and curious Americans in both parties, the White House on Saturday released the recipes for President Barack Obama’s homemade beers, revealing the executive branch’s penchant for honey-flavored brews.
In a blog post entitled “Ale to the Chief,” White House Assistant Chef and Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives Sam Kass said that “with public excitement about White House beer fermenting such a buzz, we decided we better hop right to it.”
“To be honest, we were surprised that the beer turned out so well since none of us had brewed beer before,” Kass wrote.
The key ingredient for the White House Honey Brown Ale and the White House Honey Porter, though, may be tough to come by — the honey is straight from the White House’s first-ever beehive.
Kass wrote that the “honey gives the beer a rich aroma and a nice finish but it doesn’t sweeten it.”
However, Brandon Skall, the chief executive of local brewery DC Brau, said it would “pump up the alcohol and give it some sweetness.”
The ale would likely pair well with a spicy and savory dish such as pork tenderloin or roast duck, said Skall, who added he would like to make the beers in his District of Columbia brewery. The porter would work well with a dessert or even floated with ice cream, he added.
The audacity of hops
The recipes were released as Obama headed to campaign in Colorado, a swing state that is embracing small, independent beer producers. The birthplace of Coors beer currently has the third highest number of craft breweries in the country, behind only California and Washington, according to the web magazine Atlantic Cities.
The commander-in-chief bought a home brewing kit last year and, according to media reports, has served the beer at St. Patrick’s Day and Super Bowl celebrations. Obama is now part of a growing movement – 28,835 people currently belong to the American Homebrewers Association.
Although George Washington brewed beer at his Mount Vernon home, there’s “no evidence that any beer has been brewed in the White House,” Kass wrote.
Last month, Obama told a man in Iowa that his campaign bus was stocked with White House beers, and even shared a sample. Curiosity came to a head in the last few weeks as recipe requests poured onto the White House’s online petition site known as “We the People.”
Obama’s opponent in the November election, Mitt Romney, belongs to the Mormon faith, which shuns alcohol. But the Republican Party could still tap voter interest – its vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan hails from Wisconsin, a major beer-making state, and he has professed affection for micro-brews.

Pity he hasn’t ‘brewed up’ a budget Congress will touch for three years running now. Or maybe not, considering.
Sorry, but puff pieces about politicians deserve grouchy responses. There’s a little more to journalism than rewriting press releases, if this one was rewritten.
That was a grouchy response? Seems more like a regurgitation of a tired and over-simplified talking point.
Oh, weak. Progressives really can’t take being snarked back at, can they?
It’s not snark, it was just a stupid comment. Yeah, there hasn’t been a budget, but simply saying it in regards to Obama isn’t illuminating whatsoever. It’s over-simplified and lazy — that or it reveals a prejudice against Obama that isn’t fact-based. There is nothing the President could do in terms of a budget that would illicit support from Senate Republicans and/or the House. Everything has been tried — even before the debt ceiling super committee came back with a plan, congressmen in the House like Ryan explicitly stated they wouldn’t accept any compromise. You want to pin that on Obama? Good for you, but like I said, it’s not reality based.
If you’ll look back at some (a lot) of the progressive snark on these pages I think you’ll find the two aren’t mutually exclusive.
Kind of like ChrisJ1234 and Schoonerdog’s comments, right.
On edit….
Or even better tag’s comment
Conservatives specialize in “simple” explanations or rationalizations.
The President is not responsible for the Budget. Congress creates a budget and the only thing the President can do is sign it or veto it. The lack of a budget is squarely in the hands of the Republican Congress.
Nonetheless, presidents do submit budgets and Congress (both the Democratic dominated Senate and the House even prior to the 2010 takeover by the Republicans) turned Obama’s down flat.
And in fact, the Republican House has passed budgets, which the Democratic Senate has refused to consider – while offering nothing themselves except a patchwork of continuing resolutions. Presumably Obama, as his party’s titular leader, has something to do with this.
The budgets passed out of the Republican House have been based on Ryan’s budget which any sane economist will tell you would be disasterous.
And the Democratically controlled Senate won’t even bring them up to vote them down because they don’t want to be seen as voting against them. Some ‘disastrous’.
Sane people do not vote on disasterous legislation.
Aha! You’ve just justified three years of congressional Republican obstructionism! ;^)
No, it refers to the fact that Republicans refuse, absolutely refuse, even in instances of 10 to 1 in their favor, to compromise. Instead, opting to vote and re-vote on their own hyper-partisan legislation over and over knowing full well it won’t pass in the Senate. I’d rather see attempts at real compromise than that.
Agreed!
That’s like letting the Tiger out of the cage at the zoo to see if it will let kids pet it!
The President does submit a budget each fiscal year to Congress for consideration.

“Submission of the President’s Budget in “Transition Years”

the President submits a budget that is usually taken into consideration by the House of Representatives and then the House works on the budget usually in conjunction with the President.
The current House of Representatives has not worked with the President at all.
Not even 1 Democrat voted for any of his budgets. Not only were they not serious, they reflected a lack of competence and leadership.
If the White House would reveal the Presidents college transcripts, that would be news.
Tired, repetitious, attempt at futility.
How about brewing up some jobs.
ROMNEY / RYAN 2012 !!!
Sure. How about a loss?
Marijuana is safer than alcohol! Tell the president to legalize!
Who gives a rat’s arse about what beer Obama drinks? This is the best news that the media can come up with? The emperor fiddled while Rome burned…….
I do like Romney’s business experience, but his Gordon Gecko-esque tenure at
Bain Capital concerns me. I also have a problem with him calling himself pro-life. In fact, Romneycare provided for taxpayer funded abortifacients
(Pharmaceuticals that cause spontaneous abortion) How many catholics know this?
He also is continually calling himself a christian to gain votes, when most of us learned in Sunday school that this is not the case.

Romneys tenure as a businessman was almost exclusively in the role of a CEO!
Democracy is not embraced in that role, it is mostly a dictatorship!
Gripping story, really. If Obama wants us to forget his incompetence, he should give out the crack recipe he used when dealing in high school and college.

Hops and change?
I hop for news of a big change on November 6th.
Need to repeat 4th grade English?
Haven’t checked the recipe but if it’s based on honey, rather than just honey flavored grain-based beer, it’s mead.
I wonder what Brew Count Romney Drinks?
A Positive , or O ?
Probably Straight from the Tap!
I Vant to Drinnnkk Your bloooodd!!!
