BELFAST – Margaret E. Merrithew, 91, died Sept. 2, 2012, at Harbor Hill Center, Belfast. She was born Sept. 29, 1920, in Belfast, to Stuart E. Brackett and Hazel (Dean) Brackett.
As a young girl growing up in Belfast she said she knew everyone in town. One of her greatest enjoyments was figure skating on the Muck. She was a 1938 graduate of Crosby High School. After high school she worked for several Belfast businesses, Foster’s Store and the lower five and dime, McLellans. She married John T. Merrithew, July 1, 1943. During World War II, while her husband was serving in the U.S. Navy, she worked for General Electric Corp., Lynn, Mass., building components for jet engines. After the war she and Johnny returned to Maine and built a home in Searsport, where they resided until his death in 2004. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker enjoying many years working in her gardens and cooking world class meals for family gatherings. In mid-life she again returned to the work force working in the meat department of the new A&P in Belfast. She was a former member of the Rebekah’s and Searsport Harbor Extension.
She is survived by her son, Jack and his wife, Rebekka Merrithew, of Searsport; grandson, John V. Merrithew of Searsport; two brothers, Stuart Brackett Jr. and his wife, Betty, of Hampden and Fred Brackett and wife, Charlotte, of Searsport; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother and sister-in-law, George and Shirley Brackett of Florida. The family thanks Dr. Maycock and the staff at Harbor Hill for their care of Margaret.
Family and friends are invited to call 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be afterward at Mount Prospect Cemetery, Stockton Springs.
