BANGOR, Maine — A Medway man remained Tuesday night at the Penobscot County Jail unable to make $50,000 cash bail set by a judge earlier in the day in connection with a brutal attack on a Greenbush woman in her home early Monday morning.
Nicholas Hutchinson, 23, made his first court appearance Tuesday at the Penobscot Judicial Center on charges of robbery and elevated aggravated assault, both Class A crimes.
He reportedly knew the victim.
Hutchinson and another man demanded money and methadone from the 30-year-old victim, who was home with her two children, ages 5 and 3, according to court documents.
Investigators with the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office continued Tuesday to look for a second man allegedly involved in the break-in at a trailer on East Ridge Road at 1 a.m. Monday. The other suspect’s name has not been released.
The victim, Marcia Fieger, spoke to reporters after Hutchinson’s court appearance. She said that two men wearing masks broke in through a window in her son’s room.
Fieger told police that she was sprayed with Mace and hit with a Taser. She also was beaten with a tire iron and a fire extinguisher, according to court documents.
On Tuesday, she told reporters she had bruises all over her body from the attack and 16 stitches in her head and face.
“They did not just damage me physically; my children have been damaged [psychologically],” Fieger said. “They knew Nicholas [Hutchinson] and they are so scared. The only thing that has made them feel safe is that he is in jail at this time.”
Penobscot County sheriff’s deputies were called to Fieger’s home shortly before 1 a.m. on Labor Day by neighbors who saw the victim outside of her trailer trying to get away from Hutchinson and the other man, according to court documents.
Fieger told investigators that she recognized Hutchinson’s voice and in the struggle with him was able to pull off his mask and see his face. The two men fled on foot after she got the Taser away from Hutchinson and began hitting him in the face.
Fieger had nearly $6,000 in cash in her purse inside the trailer. It was a student loan payment she had recently cashed, according to court documents. Fieger told detectives that when Hutchinson found out she had received the loan, he demanded more money than the $350 she had paid him recently for a bike.
Sheriff’s deputies located Hutchinson hiding in a closet in the master bedroom of a trailer on Main Road in Greenbush about 6 a.m. Monday.
Investigators with the Criminal Investigation Division of the sheriff’s office have asked that anyone with information about the incident call Detective Bill Flagg at 945-4585.
Methadone.Seems to be involved in a lot of crimes lately but it’s ok because it is a “legal” drug.

Everyone in there is framed and innocent and- FYI- inmates don’t have their own justice system “in there” They walk the narrow straight line so they can get out when there supposed to or earlier for good time–they don’t exact vengeance on other criminals, no matter the crime. Lest they add a lot of time on their own sentence’s and make the stay there harder for themselves. Folks who think that scum like this are put into a deep dark abyss and beat up , raped , starved etc by other inmates are profoundly mistaken..They are more likely playing cribbage, ping pong, pool, watching movies, spending time playing in the gym etc-nice clean linen on the beds –3 hardy squares a day, pretty much a leisurely life..the old days of actually paying for your crimes has changed dramatically–and the life behind bars is not at all what most in society thinks it is.
I guess you have never been on the inside, I did 8 years in a maximum security prison, non of us were framed or innocent, we were all guilty and belonged right where we were, some of us learned from our mistakes and got out, some didn’t. alot of the people in there were never going to see the outside of the wall, the lifers, they would do the payback, nothing to loose, alot of them had wives and children on the outside, they don’t like people who hurt women or children either, I spent some time with a man who put his wife thru a wood chipper, He killed her first. this may sound crazy but he was a nice enough guy to talk to but you didn’t want to have him mad at you, I watched this man rip a guys eyeball right out of his head, he had nothing to loose, was never coming out, I saw some real bad things go on while I was there, we did get treated well. Times have changed ,the justice system seems to go for pleas and probation or time served, this boy will probably go into a minium,medium security prison , kept in protective custody away from the general population, be out for time served, I hope not.
I commend you for doing your time and learning that there is a better way to go thru life–I actually do know quite a bit about the inside–but i should have stressed minimum security (where this lowlife will prob be) At a max penitentiary some prisoners have as you stated “nothing to lose” cause they are there for the rest of their miserable lives and will never see the light of day- for this is the path they were thrown onto or chose for themselves…in any case I know that most in min security don’t really care what the other guy did to get there–they only want to slide thru and get out without extending the time they already have to do–and by being vigilantes they are not going to do this–and they def don’t want to go to a max sys where as you stated there are some real badazz’s.

He is no victim, but he does need help. Locking him up, throwing away the key and forgetting about him for a decade or more will only result in a more hardened criminal being released back into society. If we only address the punishment of criminals and not their psychology, we will forever be fighting a losing battle against those who have no fear of consequence.
He will only accept help if he truly wants to change. You can place all the world in front of him, but that doesn’t accomplish a thing but money spent. We have been providing prisoner rehabilitation for many years, but only a small minority do anything with it. Capitol punishment worked out of fear. There is no more fear amongst the bad guys.

I don’t know this man. some people would say I tried to make my son out to be a misunderstood victim. The Hermon schools was not helpful with my son, easier on their end to blame someone else. Today he is nearly 40 and we only learned in the last few yrs that he has Aspergers.

The methadone clinics are the bread and butter for penquis .(formorly project ride). I would like to see DHHS stop paying for penquis to transport them to methadone clinics. let them get there the best way they can and also they should pay for the clinics out of their own pockets.
Yet they’ll cut the benefits for the most needy, elderly patients in the state. It makes no sense to me.
Methadone treatments for people hooked on heroin and other drugs, are supposed to assist druggies in detoxification. Or, kicking the habit. It helps people cope with withdrawal from cocaine and other drugs, pleasantly reducing the accompanying agony.
Why we should support people whose reckless disregard for their health and those around them is a little ridiculous. We are maintaining treatment centers for druggies, who get the “lifter” or pain reducer. But it doesn’t stop there. With a shot of Methadone, druggies can indulge in their snorting or needle jabbing, knowing that a free shot of Methadone will ease the pain when the “Coke” wears off and reality raises its ugly and painful head.
The best way to cut smoking, drinking and drugs is simply – Cold Turkey. It’s tough. Costs nothing and is sheer misery. But it works.
Why are we helping druggies to continue their costly and dehumanizing habit? Methadone is a crutch.
Methadone is an opiate and it is addictive. The dose that they receive keeps them from getting sick but where the clinics fail is they do not decrease the doses to wean the addicts, they keep feeding it to them.
The more they have on the roster getting the drug, the more money the clinic gets.

I was thinking the same thing Chelsey. Why doesnt the DA send a message to these women abusers that their actions will NOT be tolerated. They used a tire iron on her. Any one of those blows to the head could have ended her life. Attempted Murder would keep this SOB in jail where he belongs before he does it again to someone else and succeeds in killing someone.

Maybe somebody who doesn’t have a bank account. A lot of banks and credit unions won’t open savings accounts for people who don’t pass the checking account screening process. That’s very wrong and the regulators don’t care at all.
Can you help me out here Paul. What is the checking account screening process that will not allow one to open a savings account? Seems like may be trying the wrong bank.
they run your name through a system and if you’ve had a bank account that you overdrew and it was charged off then usually you can’t get another one, even at a different bank, it all gets reported to that system (and no, I can’t think of the name of it right now)

Most banks won’t let you cash a check unless you have an account with them.
At least they have to cash checks that are drawn on their accounts. I took a 50 mile bus ride when I was young to cash an insurance company check. I had to argue a bit because they wanted me to open a savings account and wait a few days before I could get the funds. They finally agreed to call the insurance company for confirmation it was not a forgery. It wasn’t huge but it was too big to cash at any supermarkets.

The difference is, this case is a violent home invasion and robbery at a residence with young children. The case in Howland is no doubt just a fight taken too far.

Those on methadone will consistently claim that the drug “does nothing” for them. If it “does nothing,” why are they going to such lengths to get it? Even that guy who drank the puke or whatever – remember that? Gross.
Walmart recently started carrying “personal defense shotguns”..One is a Stevens/Savage pistle grip model 12 gauge pump , black synthetic stock with 181/2 inch barrel for 199.00..Another is the same minus the pistle grip..179.00….Leave it to walmart to come up with a simple cheap solution…Can’t keep either in stock since we started carrying them..Also carrying Military Grade Buckshot as well as PDX Personal Defense rounds that have a slug surrounded by buckshot..Folks are buying them like crazy for this very reason..That is the solution for these scum…The unmistakable sound of a pump shotgun chambering a round usually makes the perp wet his pants because he knows he is about to die…Once a few of these scum have to have their brains scooped into a baggie you will see this stuff stop…And as fast as folks are buying them it won’t be long…

I have known Nick a long time and it is about time that little SOB spend some serious jail time. He has a criminal record a mile long that includes robbing, I believe, a McDonalds in Old Town…he deserves to be locked up for good. I don’t know about all of you, but I am sick and tired of spending my tax payer dollars on state representation in court for losers like him. Back in Nov 2011, a man was brutally murdered with a crowbar. That killing murderer got only $30,000 bail , which should have been much much more, according to this $50,000 bail for beating up this woman. These bail amounts vary so much for same crime.
and the reason why the bails are so ridiculous, is because the Judges in Maine are too laid back. This state needs a complete douching of it’s Higher ups’ in the Judicial System. There is absolutely no reason a bail for an assault and a murder should vary by $20,000. The state of Maine should grow a set and start over crowding prisons and we can have the prisoners fight for bed space. Why do we care if they are over crowded anyway?? This was an outrageous thing to do to a woman living alone with her small children. She was in her bed totally defenseless and at their mercy. It’s her home and it’s her business if she had methadone and cash on hand. Should we all be afraid to have anything of value at hand lest some thug decide to take it from us? I personally hope they don’t make bail.

Maybe Marcia should not have told her meth friends about getting a windfall of 6000.00. And why would a student loan be paid directly to her and not be paid direct to what ever school/college she was going to attend? Now the children are damaged you know what that means—-glad they were not injured in the incident.
A student loan can be for living expenses and other things besides tuition. It can be in addition to scholarships and grants. I’ve known people whose loan checks got sent directly to the school and then the school gave them a check for the amount left over after tuition and fees.
Had this loser in class years ago. He was always getting away with things, and he was good looking so all of the girls liked him…nice girls..they would do his homework and let him cheat on tests. This person along with the other one sould be locked up for life. This was a brutal crime. This woman could have been killed by them. I bet that they don’t do anymore than 3 to 5 years for this though. This is why we have people killing others and burning their body’s in cars.
