FAIRFIELD, Maine — A Fairfield man with a long criminal history in Central Maine was arrested again Sunday night, according to police.

Officers responding to a domestic complaint on Newhall Street around 10 p.m. encountered an intoxicated John O’Connor, 48, according to Fairfield police Chief John Emery.

O’Connor was out on bail for a previous domestic assault, Emery said, and his bail conditions prohibited him from consuming alcohol, so attempted to arrest him.

But when Fairfield police Officers Spencer Grinnel and Paul St. Amand got him in handcuffs, O’Connor became combative, headbutting both officers and breaking Grinnell’s glasses, behavior that didn’t surprise Emery.

“Mr. O’Connor likes to fight,” Emery said.

O’Connor was eventually subdued, placed into a patrol car and taken to the Kennebec County Jail, Emery said. He was charged with assault on a police officer, terrorizing, criminal mischief, violating conditions of release and refusing to submit to arrest.

O’Connor remained at the jail Tuesday morning.

“He’s well-known to all the police agencies here in Central Maine,” said Emery. “Anytime you deal with him he wants to fight. He’s 48 years old, you’d think he would grow out of it.”

O’Connor’s rap sheet includes robbery and assault convictions.

    1. Should have done it the old fashioned way and introduced him to Mr. Nightstick.
Tasing is fun to watch, but you don’t don’t get that satisfied feeling.

  1. I’m sure this upstanding citizen will have cheap bail and will be out and about in no time….I love our ‘system.’

  2. That little incident shows why this character has a long criminal history. He has apparently gone from angry young man to angry older man without slowing down. Or growing up.

  3. Once he gets out of jail send him to the high mountains so he can get in a head butting contest with the mountain goats!   Inexpensive and it’ll take care of the problem.

  4. “He’s 48 years old, you’d think he would grow out of it.”   That’s the problem – this loser exemplifies the last generation or two of failures who never grew up.  They are not smart enough to do anything but drink and fight, and judges do not have enough backbone to put them away or make them serve full sentences.

  5. What he needs is a nice long stay at DownEast. Let him play with the CO’s there and find out what it’s gonna cost him. And this guy’s booking photo needs to be put up at every Station and Jail in the State with the warning that he’s a known ‘fighter’.

And, as a kind of final warning shot, as it were, this guy needs to be told in no uncertain terms, by the Sentencing Judge, that he keeps this assaulting an Officer crap up, with his history, that one day he’s gonna run into an Officer who’s gonna not be so forgiving as these 2. Even in Maine there is a limit as to just how far ‘forgiving’ goes. You do this crap out in places like Wyoming, Montana and Colorado and the local sheriff’s tend to look the other way when a good old fashioned ‘woodshedding’ is applied, more so since the Cinema shooting occured. Not nice but since when is protecting the public’s safety a particularly nice thing to do and be responsible for.
