BANGOR, Maine — A man whose driver’s license had been suspended and his female passenger, who was out on bail after being charged with OUI and driving without a license, went directly back to jail Wednesday afternoon.

Kevin Wood, 33, was pulled over near the old Bangor YMCA building on Hammond Street at 3:24 p.m. Wednesday after officers Steve Pelletier and Brian Smith noticed a smashed front windshield on the 2001 black, four-door Audi sedan he was driving.

Neither Wood nor Ashley Awalt, 22, who was in the front passenger seat, had valid driver’s licenses. Neither had permanent addresses either, although Awalt’s legal address is listed as Old Town on her auto registration form.

The Bangor officers found that Wood and Awalt had much more in common when, while searching the car, they found that both appeared to be under the influence — and in possession — of synthetic hallucinogenic drugs also known as bath salts.

Awalt, who admitted to the officers that there were syringes or needles in the car when asked, was out on bail after being charged with operating without a license and operating under the influence.

“Both Wood and Awalt appeared to have been using bath salts, according to the arrest report,” said Sgt. Tom Reagan.

They also were both in possession of bath salts, which violated Awalt’s bail conditions and resulted in Wood receiving a felony charge due to a prior drug charge.

Wood also was charged with operating after suspension, as his license had been revoked.

Both Wood and Awalt spent the night at Penobscot County Jail. Wood was being held on $250 bail and Awalt was ineligible for bail. They both are scheduled to make a court appearance Friday at Penobscot Judicial Center.

  1. Imagine my surprise when I read this article tonight.  (NONE whatsoever, getting used to this as Bangor Maine has unfortunately  become “Bath Salt Capital USA)!…I’d seen this very same car around a couple of times while running errands in Bangor.  I thought the driver and passenger looked like a complete hot mess both times.  Being nice, I’ll just say they didn’t appear to be  your typical Audi owners.   Guess my instincts were correct as I just knew something didn’t look right at all. I had thought about calling the police, but what would I have said?  “Umm, I just sat next to a car at an intersection and the driver and passenger looked messed up”?  And I could’ve followed it up with “oh yeah, by the way, after your done with them, there is a guy standing off to the side of the southbound I-95 exit who has been there for at least an hour staring into traffic who is completely zoned out.  Might want to check him out after your done with the Audi crew”!!(Yes, that was the scene on Broadway this afternoon, I really can’t make up this stuff.)   Oh well, nice to know the homeless bath salt “king and queen” have spent the night in jail (according to the article above…even though they weren’t arrested until this afternoon) and are no longer free to drive around both illegally and completely messed up.  Sadly, I can’t help but think, police are really fighting a losing battle here in Bangor these days. Very scary times.

    1.  Bangor’s getting nnnnnnnnnnasty. Can’t even take your kids to the park with out finding bloody needles loaded with drugs. I’d be so embarrassed to be the mdea… makes me wonder wtf is going on.

      1. And what park is this? I never once found a needle, let one loaded with drugs at any of the parks I’ve taken my daughter to over the years.

          1. You are in the woods, not on a playground. Finding what is on that video is going to happen, it has been taking place for years. There are plenty known places one can go and shoot that sort of video.

If you had that same video showing that happening on a playground in a park day after day, you might have a point but stuff in the woods. That is nothing new, at all.

          2. dude, i was at the freaking second st park, at the bottom of the steps that lead into the park right where  children walk, where my children chased balls the previous days before that… stop making excuses.. are you serious??!!

          3. LOL, we specifically stuck to playing ball that day because my husband
removed a condom from the cedar chips below the slide the day before.

          4. Take better video then. You can also avoid that area and teach your kids to avoid it as well. There are places in Bangor you will come across this stuff, it is going to happen but again, it is nothing new.

Edit: I’m going to bed now. Will continue later this evening.

          5. Kids are playing just feet away from this mess! What is wrong with you? Defending druggies? Close all methedone clinics today, they don’t work, they attract druggies from away!

          6. http://bangor-launch.newspackstaging.com/2012/08/07/news/bangor/bangors-national-night-out-brings-more-than-100-people-to-second-street-park/

If there is no problem in 2nd street park, then why was this gathering even necessary?

Nope.  It’s nothing “new” but the amount of drug usage in Bangor is growing without question.  I’ve found needles before.  Many people have found needles.

Let’s face it – drugged out people (generally speaking) aren’t real concerned about littering – in fact, a lot of the time they are hard-pressed to even stand up straight.  This isn’t a little weed.

Be that as it may, kids play in the woods too.  The more we downplay this problem, the more it increases.

          7. Did you let the police or public works know about the needles? They will come clean them up. This is unacceptable, you should send a copy of the youtube to city council.

          8.  imho..that very well could be a fake scene..the spoons look unused, and what drug addict would put the protective caps back on after using the needle..just saying

          9. Come check the park out yourself if you dare, just saying, I have found needles in the very same park, some with caps some without

          10.  For those in denial you can confirm it as I turned it into Bangor PD. I borrowed a bag from a nearby resident who was cleaning his car to clean this crap up.. I obviously was not going to leave it for other kids to discover. The resident was shocked it showed up so soon as they as a community in that area are trying to stay on top of cleaning this junk up. Freaking sad. The officer said thanks, you’re a brave person,  next time call and they’ll clean it up.. he warned it may take awhile as right now needle calls are low priority, even though they get LOTS.

          11. That is a dangerous situation, in my opinion.  I hope that mess has been cleaned up.  As another poster wrote, please contact the police if you haven’t, already.  That junk needs to be disposed of before some unsupervised kids start playing with it.

        1. I live in the “Nicer” part of Bangor and we have found needles many times on the sidewalk or in the park. Last fall, my kids found a black box full of drugs and needles … we turned it into the police.. the womans name was written in it. No section of bangor is exempt from this.. I find it very sad that I had to explain to my youngest son the dangers of needles and to never pick them up.. at 4 years old.

    2. Hey there….Surviveda…..What the hell does it matter if the two people were driving a Audi??????A little jeaulousy there….I can almost bet my last dollar you are a damn lliberal driving a Hybrid!!!!!!

    3. I would like to say…..What the heck does it matter if the two suspects were driving an Audi ?????You really need to get a life and worry about what you are driving….and as far as the guy standing on the side of the road…who cares….i really think you need to get a life and worry about yourself……ps…i bet you drive a scooter!!!!!!

  2. Bangor needs more drug rehab clinics!!!   thats why all the bums are here, they get the morning fix and never leave!

    1. You can have a rehab place on every corner & it will not work unless these people WANT to quit. They have it good, in their eyes: they live off the state, they have plenty of access to their drugs, why change anything?

    2. Get rid of the meth clinics! Make them drug clinics, where they come off the drugs not put on other ones

    3. I was being sarcastic about Bangor needing more rehab clinics.  Bangor has to many clinics that are not working now!!!!  We need to get people off drugs not keep giving them a legal dosage every morning!
