ORONO, Maine — Orono police are looking for two unidentified women who stole beer from the back storage cooler of the Thriftway store on Park Street Sunday night.
The two women, who are shown clearly on store security camera footage, asked to use the employee restroom out back shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday night. While back there, one or both of them broke into a case of beer and removed three cans, according to Sgt. Scott Lajoie.
The images show two women, one with dark hair and wearing what appears to be a black shirt with the word “Diamonds” and a logo on it. The other woman has blonde hair and was wearing a gray Cleveland Browns football team sweatshirt.
If anyone believes they know the identity of either or both of the women, they are asked to call Officer Stephen Marko or Detective Derek Dinsmore at 866-4000. Anyone preferring to make an anonymous tip can do so through Orono’s public safety website using the “Crime Watch” link, which is http://police.orono.org/crimewatch/.

Smile you’re on criminal camera.
On a scale of 1 – 10 (ten being the worst), with all the other rampant felony crimes going on, this one is a 2. I wish the other “criminals of night” could get the same level of exposure. Oh well, looks like they were stealing fuel for the animal house party in orono……
A sorority pledge?
*sorority
Whoops. Lol. I guess there is a difference.
Oh gosh, big difference. :P
Gosh, they’re going to get wasted tonight… Ha. So young, so sad.
they look like dangerous criminals laughing all the way to the cooler, bring your children in and send out ten police units to find these hard corp felons.please tell me there is more important important crime that requires the public’s help in solving kinda lick three people killed and burned to a crisp in a car ?
Of course there’s more important work. But can’t they do this *and* protect and serve against more serious crimes?
Honestly, no. If they are busy tracking down these two hardcore thieves, they are not doing something more productive. Unless they can be at two places at once. Which, they cannot be.
Funny note, it use to be Protect and Care. Now its Serve. My only (rhetorical) question is, who, or what are they protecting and serving?
The police received a call from the store that someone stole property. Do you think they shouldn’t have responded at this point?
OK, so next they took down the clerk’s story and got a copy of the surveillance video. All of that probably took less than an hour, and it was after 10:00pm on a Sunday night. Do you think they should have walked away at *that* point and not done their jobs? Should they have just decided “oh well, it’s just beer,” and decided that even though they have a clear picture of the thieves, they might as well just not bother looking for them?
OK, so they take the video back to the station. At this point, they hand it off to administrative staff who upload the video and send the press notice that they are looking for these women. The only thing left for the officer to do is take a five minute call from Andrew Neff when he calls from the BDN to get a quote to go along with the story.
That’s it. That’s the total amount of work they did on this; responded to a call, took a statement, handed a video to their dispatcher, then talked to a reporter for 5 minutes… ON A SUNDAY NIGHT AFTER 10pm! I guess I’m not terribly worried about hardcore thieves getting away with anything in the meantime.
way to go. you obviously understand the criminal justice system better than these knee jerk emotional reaction trolls.
Police have to respond and take a report WHENVER there is a complainant. If they don’t the city could become liable in certain cases.
I highly doubt they had an APB and 10 cruiser out looking for these girls on sunday. They are kids stealing some beer maybe 30 for 40 bucks worth?
Orono PD has nothing to do with the triple homicide in Bangor. That’s up to BPD and the State Police.
exactly! One of Orono’s biggest problems in underage and youth binge drinking with the university there in town.
I attended UNH in the little seacoast town of Durham, we had UNH campus PD (a legit state accredited police agency) and Durham PD. I talked to the Durham PD officer frequently in my internship with the sheriff’s department. They said that the local highschool had a very high rate of alcohol related incidents compared to other area highschools.
Thrifway has better camera’s than rite aid, or most banks.
I agree these are some of the best photos I have seen posted. I know locally the Rite Aid was requested to upgrade the cameras and add out doorparking lot cams too but guess the cost vs return wasn’t there. they refused
They are fairly cheap these days. Even in the dark out side.
u can get a pair of em @ walmart for like 80 bucks and they have pretty decent short range quality.
And most pharmacies to!
That’s an….’interesting’ analysis. You better let the coppers know to watch out for ladies in the IBTC, they’re all future felons!
My post was ‘bail’. I was hoping it would inspire one of the thieves themselves to retort to it.
With pictures like that, I doubt they’ll remain unidentified for long.
The one in the Browns sweatshirt should have been stealing hair dye, not booze.
If they wanted beer so badly they could have just stopped by my place!
agreed let me know ill be over with the pizza and cards
Anyone notice the diamonds shirt???
Yup, bet she will be easy to find.
It’s not a diamonds shirt, it’s a Diamond Supply Co. shirt
Perhaps they have no family in the area, and prefer to eat out on Thanksiving?
Oh boy, can’t wait to see how hard they throw the book at these two young ladies. Such a horrible crime. The three beer’s they stole didn’t cost as much as this webspace and the amount paid for someone to type this up, not to mention the salary of the officers involved. Sad situation, made more so because its a tax write-off for the store…. and, all this for 3 cans of some cheap beer?
Absurd.
Stealing is stealing, a lot of people are caught this way and it only takes a minute to put it up here. If you make an example out 1 then you will find you have way less theft later. I know I wouldn’t want to turn up on the internet if I shoplifted and word would spread from there. The cops, they are there and being paid a whole shift anyway. Only 3 beers, how is one persons theft any more important than another ? If we did this kind of thing more often I bet you would see a lot less theft.
How is one persons theft more important than another?
Well, lets see… 3 beers compared to 30,000 beers. Which is more significant and thus important? The nature of the goods stolen, their value and the way in which the thieves stole them are all factors which determine the importance of the crime. I’m not sure how you manged to convince yourself that every theft is equal. They are not. These three beers will be written off and the loss will cost the store nothing. If these three beers were stolen from a citizen, the situation would be different and thus, not equal.
I can tell you have no idea how things work in this business. Lets just have someone come in two or three times a week and steal items, then lets have another person do it as well. You do know more people steal than these girls right ? Then when you just let it go on, well, you will get even more people coming in to steal because now the kind of people that steal know you are an easy mark. Now after so much loss where do you think that cost gets absorbed ? Do you think the store will pay higher insurance rates ? How about this tax deal your talking about, why don’t you tell us a little more about product loss, how about the cost of replacing the inventory stolen as well.
How easy you think it is to open, run, and survive being a business in Maine? Especially a non chain store business. Considering the number of lushes that go to Umaine, that place probably gets robbed every day.
Having known people who own and operate small businesses in this state and around the Greater Bangor area I can tell you it obviously is not easy. The economy is in the gutter and Maine really isn’t the most well to do state in the country. However, that does not change the fact that it was only 3 beers and it will not cost the store a penny, as it will be written off as a tax deduction. These two girls stealing a couple beers really isn’t that big of a deal.
Well Mr. Know-it-all, just MAYBE they don’t need a “tax deduction” ! It’s THEFT and it took time to report it, inventory it,
as well as replace it. We can tell you don’t have a clue about running a business..
Yep. You caught me. I dont know anything about running a business, even though I work in a shop that produces premium, top of the line, hand-built goods the old fashioned way. One of a small handful of places in the world making this certain product. A reputable place renowned for the quality of the goods produced. But you know, I don’t know anything about anything. Im just dumb dumb dumb. And I don’t think 3 beers is a huge deal, so therefore I must be real stupid. Shhh… there’s Ad hominems on these here comments.
I agree 3 beers is not a big huge deal. However that doesn’t justify putting zero effort forward in finding, prosecuting, and punishing the perpetrators. I highly doubt the Orono PD is still actively searching for these two but I think its great they throw a little electronic out reach to the public. Odds are someone knows these chicks. Maybe someone they party with they stole beer from in the past will turn them in haha. College girls who act like the world revolves around them and they don’t give a care tend to step on toes and there will be some petty retribution there!
What if two people broke into your home and stole 3 items under $10. Would that be a big deal to you? What if every day your house was broken into multiple times by thieves stealing items under $10,…. a big deal?
Extrapolate, much? What if, what if, what if.
Point is, we are not talking about private citizens being stolen from and we certainly are not talking about anyone’s house being robbed multiple times a day, every day (which is an absolutely absurd premise). If you must know, if someone broke into my house and took 3 beers and left, I really wouldn’t worry about it. If someone broke into my house multiple times a day; everyday, then it would be a problem. But I think you are really going out on a limb, here. I’m not defending theft, I am defending logic.
It was just 3 beers and they are just kids, not career criminals and that store doesnt get robbed every day multiple times a day. You need to calm down.
You can’t be more wrong !! They are now considered THIEVES and will have a record. People have to learn to respect property owned by others & GET A JOB to earn what they want instead of just “helping themselves” to whatever !!
Well, regardless… 1. Its in cans (pretty much the only good beer in cans is Boddington’s or Murphy’s Stout) and 2. Its a thrift way. So, no matter what, they were drinking the dregs. Yum.
You can get Long Trail and Blue Moon in cans as well as Baxter. Unfortunately I didn’t discover finely crafted beer until after I was out of college and had a job.
Really? Ive never seen Long Trail or Blue Moon in cans. Both decent brews. Not fantastic, but better then most things you’d find at the local ‘mart. Unfortunately? Nah. With a job, you can actually afford to drink craft beer. Too expensive otherwise.
Yeah, they have all 3 at Hannaford. Actually 4, there is Long Trail Ale as well as the Long Trail Blackberry. Check em out.
Yay Boddington’s! People look at me like I have 4 heads when I say something about it because no one knows wtf it is!
That’s cause people only drink crappy beer. Bodd’s really isn’t even that obscure but you are right, most people have no idea. I get that look too when I talk brew’s with people who claim be aficionado’s.
the camera system looks like the best thing in the store.
With the University Caine Card system you would think that they could do facial recognition that you see on CSI…if they could they would probably already caught them with pictures that clear!
look around Diamonds Strip Club
college girls ripping off a case of beer…probably on a dare… someone put out an APB and call the president–seriously? we have more important things to worry about.
i’m sure this isn’t their first time stealing. stealing is a crime whether it’s 3 beers or a car. a thief is a thief. guess they will think twice next time before ripping anyone else off. sorry people but just because there are bigger crimes and things to worry about doesnt mean we have to let all the little things go. u break the law you break the law.
Bravo ! People must understand that the attitude of it’s not really that bad is what has got us here today. Just walk down any in town street, it won’t take anyone long to run into a criminal that thinks they are not doing anything that bad. Maybe if someone held them out to shame and embarrassment early their actions would change and people would learn it’s not okay.
Just amazes people think they can get away with stealing. Cameras are everywhere, it’s not worth it.
Nice images–good cams .
They should be stealing booze from their parents like regular kids.
1. I bet their parents must be pleased to wake up this morning and see their daughters plastered(no pun intended) on the BDN. 2. If I were a Cleveland Browns fan I’d be drinking too.
We used to call it Theftway. got that name for a reason.
The clerk working the store suffered some degree of trauma. Maybe he/she will end up getting fired.
Watch one of our typical Maine lush judges in the state go easy on the thieves when these two go to court
“Diamonds” ? Perhaps they’d better check out the “Gentlemen’s Club” in Bangor for her ?
Walmart, Best Buy…All these big retail corporations “can’t afford” decent resolution camera’s but Thriftway?
they didnt make enough tips at diamonds to pay for 3 beers? come on ladies….
Unless they are from Timbuk2 someone is sure to recognize them. Doubt if any of their drinking buddies will turn them in. If they are anything like the Rite Aid thieves, they will be back.
Upload their photos to Facebook. Facebook face recognition will do the rest… scary, but true.
hope they smile pretty for their mug shots as well! hehehe….about time for some “HD” cameras….
I’m afraid both of these girls are severely misguided. Not because they stole 3 beers but because they represent themselves with a diamonds t-shirt and even worst a Cleveland Browns sweater.
Hey Mom and Dad –we are having a great time!!! Thanks
Hope it was light beer…..
a theif is a theif no matter how good looking you are if it doesnt belong to you leave it alone. or get a job and buy your own.
check facebook !
The one in the diamond shirt appears to have that “just-drank-a six-pack” look already. Quite pleased with her impending decision to five finger a few brews. The Browns fan looks like a “drink 2, spill 2 and give 2 away” type. They’re probably students at UMO, studying Criminal Justice and out doing research….least that might be their defense when the long arm of the law grabs ’em in a day or two.
It isn’t just the economy that is ruining small businesses, the shoplifters are also to blame….If anyone knows how hard it is to keep a business running and know these thieves call and turn them in.
