HOPE, Maine — A town selectman was fined $1,200 last week for a pair of drug offenses.

Eric Campbell, 48, was fined $1,000 in Rockland District Court for Class D marijuana cultivation. The complaint filed in court said that he was growing more than five plants at his property on Hatchet Mountain Road on May 29. He pleaded guilty to the offense last week and was fined $1,000.

He also was fined $200 for the civil offense of sale and use of drug paraphernalia. That was from the same date and incident, according to the complaint.

A third count of possession of marijuana was dismissed.

Hope Town Administrator Jonathan Duke said that selectmen have not discussed the matter at a meeting. Campbell’s term runs through 2013. He also served a previous term on the board, ending in 2009, according to the town report.

Maine State Police Trooper Scott Quintero issued the summonses to Campbell.

A request for comment left on Campbell’s answering machine Thursday afternoon was not immediately returned.

    1. So, if it was an OUI, he shouldn’t resign? He paid his fine. It’s an elected office, if the people of his town have a problem with this they won’t re-elect him.

  1.  total bs that  an otherwise law abiding adult cant grow and enjoy pot.  but he can buy a half gallon of lord calvert from the agency liquor store

    1. Worse, go shoot heroin for a few months then get on methadone for the rest of thier lives on our dime! I’m not a fan of drug use, mary jane or otherwise, but in the drug world, I can see your point.

  2. These drug laws are pretty skewed. If Eric has him Medical Marijuana legalities all in order, you are allowed to have more than 5 marijuana plants but only 5 (or 6, they keep changing the rules as we go -it’s hard to keep up) can be harvestable. A marijuana plant can be budding up a storm but that does not mean it is ready to be harvested. Even if it was harvested, if it was not processed, you can have as much as you want so long as you don’t dry, prune and trim it up. This loophole makes sense because some of us prefer not to grow all year round and take advantage of using the sunshine during our short growing season so we can store what we’ll need for the rest of the year and trim as needed.

If lawmakers would just listen to the people with experience growing this plant and stop thinking they know all and have to make more laws to control the people, this would not be much of an issue. I don’t want us to have the problems that California is going through but growers and lawmakers should work closely together and lawmakers must realize they don’t know everything (example -having an 8′ high fence around the plants with security lighting and notices advertising what is behind the fence = expensive and foolishness).

    1. The California dispensaries are being clamped down and i am happy, shut them greedy #*@! down…..they are hiding behind a shop and calling their weed medical……when they are selling it for the same price as the guy down the street……they could sell it for 1/10th of what they are charging…..but oh no…..they weigh it out on scales and sell it for $30.00 an 1/8th or more…..they could sell it for $20.00 dollars an ounce help the sick without robbing them….and yes still make a boatload of money…..they don’t care about the sick any where near as much as the cash…….them greedy Cali dispensaries shut them down…….better yet straight up legalize it….they had their chance to and blew it!

  3. The complaint filed in court said that he was growing more than five plants at his property on Hatchet Mountain Road on May 29.      Guess he should have stayed with the 5 plant limit.  LOL.

  4. Who were they protecting and why did the police go in his house?  It sounds like there is no more privacy in ones own home anymore.

  5. Hey i think weed should be straight up legal…….but a 1200 dollar fine for growing…..and 200 dollar fine for selling…….anyone else would be facing jail time….plus fines….and probation afterwards……what does this guy have a judge in his back pocket…….hell if i thought that is all they would do to me…..i would be growing it to use myself and i wouldn’t even feel the greed to sell it….and he is a selectman to boot.

  6.  if you research a little, you’ll find that the alcohol industry has a hand in the anti drug crusade, they don’t want any competition . it’s o.k for big tobacco to add an additive drug to hook you though.

  7. Sing along, everybody: “…and I’m proud to be an Amerikan, where at least I know I”m free, and I’d gladly…”
