PORTLAND, Maine — An aerial survey shows Maine has about 76,000 moose.

The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife uses a double-count technique in the winter where two observers independently report the number of moose observed while flying in a helicopter over northern and eastern Maine. One observer sits in the front of the helicopter while the other sites in the back on the same side. They feed data to a recorder.

The technique was adapted from Quebec and New Brunswick, where it was used to count deer.

The department did not survey southern Maine, saying the low moose population numbers in the area would likely add little to the total statewide population.

    1. That’s darn funny. But to set the record straight, we have enough bona fide human beings in our gang. So feel free to entice them to sign up for the other party.

  1. That away to dig deep into a news story BDN.  How about telling us if the numbers counted were up or down from the last time the moose population was surveyed.  Geesh!

  2. There are actually 76001 moose in our beautiful state. As Rocky the squirrel flies, he and Bullwinkle were surveying the planes surveying the herd.

  3. They all live up here in northern maine! I go down the I and once I get south of Old town/orono hardly see any moose. But up were I live see them almost daily.

  4. Oh oh! Moose and cows pass gas and are
a key contributor to CO2 emissions. Maine
moose need to be regulated and charged for
carbon credits. Why aren’t the libbers and
global warmers calling for a massive moose
hunt to stop these perpetrators of pollution?

  5. really thats like 5000 moose per county and you know the lower two thirds of the state have no where near that many moose  so it looks like aroostook. northern penobscot and piscataquis  along with franklin and and somerset   with some in oxford county . Those counties must have over ten thousand moose each. Its a laugher.
