EAST MILLINOCKET, Maine — U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, a Democrat who represent Maine’s 2nd District, has a busy schedule that keeps him away from his home in East Millinocket a great deal. Last year, he spend less than 25 nights in his own bed. When he is able to get back to his own house, he likes to spend time working in his yard. Sometimes he grabs his chainsaw and heads to his woodlot in Medway to fell a few trees for a log cabin he hopes to build someday. Other times he enjoys gardening. Recently, Bob Bangs of Windswept Gardens in Bangor, who did the initial landscaping around Michaud’s home, showed the congressman and candidate how to prune his rose bushes to promote growth and fullness.

  1. After a less than stellar career as a Congressman  … it is a good thing to find a new hobby to occupy your time.

      1.  Yeah, Maybe… But Michaud generally outspends his opposition by better than a 2-1 margin. He should be doing better than that.

btw, Is it buying an election when Democrats outspend Republicans? Or is an election only bought when Republicans outspend Democrats?

  2. Who  cares about the real issues facing our state and our country?   At least we know Mike Michaud likes to garden.  Thanks BDN for your top-notch reporting.  I can just feeling the electorate getting smarter with everyone of these articles.

        1. maine4ever is using the cucumber as a metaphor for the male member, and “fruits” as a slang reference to being gay. Then you chimed in with the “supporters” reference, as in a jock supporter, another reference to the male member.

PhaQit, you and maine4ever, are ridiculing homosexuals.

          I find that extremely offensive.

          1. A cow would feel right to home in Michaud’s garden..full of BS and manure.  BTW, he doesn’t like melons too much either.

          2. Actually, I wasn’t trying to define supporters in that manner, but rather illustrate the dwindling support he has from years of small business neglect and unwillingness to care about the staggering unemployment in the Katahdin Region, no concern about those that live each winter in fear from the cold,,, and all this from a servnt of the people that makes more than 8 times the median income of his home town.

Face it; Michaud hasn’t earned the right to represent the people of the 2nd district.

          3.  If I misinterpreted your inference, than I stand corrected.

Michaud’s public record and performance in office are fair game, and go with the territory, however, no one should have to defend his or her sexual orientation. Mainer4ever’s comment was inappropriate and offensive.

    1. In a part of the state soo strapped for jobs (his home town), one would think he would give his gardening business to a local,,,,
      Guess how much he spent….

In a recent small business pole, old Mike scored -ZERO- in his efforts in economic development. Not even local Democrat officials wanted him around the Cate Street deal.

Maybe it time to let him spend a lot more time in the garden…!

      Vote Raye for Congress
At least Kevin knows how to write a pay check; Mike only known how to cash them

    2. I heartily disagree.
BDN is only showing that the democrat party has sunk to such a low level that they are no more than fluff and whimsey.
Much like the editorial and “investigative” staff here.

  3. I suspect that beneath his garden, completely hidden from view, are his many scholarly volumes on Marx and Lenin plus the recent reprints with new introductions by John Baldacci, a noted intellectual.

  4. Unbelievable… but yes I believe it.  This guy has his life long pension & med care, but still clings to the good life in D.C. while he pays lip service to the veterans & working folks of Maine who keep electing him to live there.  We get what YOU keep voting for.  Time for some new blood.

    1. 800 dollars a month for a Ford Escape????? WOW!!!!!! You should recheck your figures.. I am sure you just pulled them out of thin air!!!!!!

      1. Here’s your thin air… US House disbursement statements: http://disbursements.house.gov/2011q4/2011q4_vol2.pdf

Also check here for an article about it: http://bangor-launch.newspackstaging.com/2012/05/24/opinion/youve-come-a-long-way-mike/

I was recently quoted on a lease for a new Ford Fusion for about $200/month.  Surely the Congressman can drive like the rest of us when he’s doing so on OUR DIME (which he shouldn’t be, at $174k/year… and the vast majority of members of Congress don’t have government cars).

        1. Democrat stimulus plan?  Shouldn’t he be driving a Government Motors Corporation vehicle since Ford didn’t accept a dime of taxpayer $?

          1. His lease is from the democrat insider Lee family, owners of Lee Auto Group.
It is payback for their democrat fundraising efforts to get these scumbags elected.
            One hand washes the other.
            That’s the way democrats roll.

      2. How about MORE than 8.5 times more the median income of his own home town & he’s done NOTHING in economic recovery, small business assistance to help. Media Mike actually rated ZERO in small business assistance

  5. In what State is Mike’s  primary home? .. There ought to be a law that Maine politicans must live in their home state at least 6months 1 day per year. I know it’s hard to take bribes that way but I’m just saying you should be a Mainer.

  6. The poison is dripping from all the republican comments. Great way to start your day, hate, lies, and discontent.  The good ole boy machine is working overtime today.

    1. The hate & discontent come from years of neglect of the 2nd district-
The lies come from Mike attempting to take credit for other peoples work…!

  7. BDN…the MSNBC of Maine…did you forget there are two candidates? Oh that’s right, Kevin Raye couldn’t be reached for comment cause he had better things to do like come up with new ideas on how to fix the mess that Michaud and his buddy Obama created, including the reality that 2/3rds of the casualties in the Afganistan front have come during this administration’s watch. More military men and woman have died in 3 1/2 years under Obama, then in 8 years under Bush, yet no mention of it since Obama took office. No, your right, gardening is much more important….Journalism at it’s finest…keep toosting those softballs BDN…Keep looking the other way…Keep loosing money, and keep asking yourselves why?

    1. Are you that far removed from “life and experience” to actually believe it’s Obama’s fault for the casualties in Afghanistan?  If so, I have a nice plot of land I’ll sell you in Florida….and maybe you want to take off those things they put on horses when they race…you know, those things that don’t allow them to SEE what’s outside of their NARROW TUNNEL VISION?

  8. In a recent small business pole, old Mike scored -ZERO- in his efforts in economic development. Not even local Democrat officials wanted him around the Cate Street deal.
Maybe its time to let him spend a lot more time in the garden…!

    Vote Raye for Congress
