HOULTON, Maine — After the candidate the town initially selected to take the helm rescinded his application, town councilors on Monday evening voted unanimously to hire the current town manager of Millinocket to take over.
The decision to hire Eugene Conlogue, Millinocket’s town manager for 13 years, took place shortly after the council meeting began. Conlogue attended the meeting but did not speak.
Councilors were pleased with their decision to hire Conlogue, who has a home in Presque Isle and will split time between Presque Isle and Houlton.
“We are very excited to have someone of your caliber on board,” said Councilor Sue Tortello.
Other councilors welcomed him aboard.
The council began searching for a new manager in March, after Doug Hazlett resigned after seven years in the position.
Conlogue’s hiring came after the council thought it had found its new manager in Wade Hanson, who once worked as the town’s code enforcement officer and its community development director.
Hanson was hired in September 2001 as manager of the town’s civic center, and in 2002 as the town’s code enforcement officer. He took over as its community development director in July 2007. Hanson resigned from that position last September to serve as the economic development director for the Houlton Band of Maliseets.
Then councilors announced on Aug. 13 that they had hired him to be the next town manager and expected Hanson to take his post on Sept. 10.
Two weeks after he was hired, however, Hanson changed his mind. He gave no reason for his decision and remains employed by the Maliseets.
Conlogue will start his new job in mid-October.
Town Clerk and Interim Town Manager Cathy O’ Leary will remain at her post until Conlogue steps in.
Gene was forced out, and a good part of this was directly due to Quimby.
Quimby will “never” get her park
While Gene will continue to advise the anti-park movement; this backroom BS only served to hurt the Town of Millinocket. The town’s loss highlights those Town Councilors that support Quimby and were instrumental in driving out Gene, and now many in Millinocket are looking forward to voting them out.
If they think this is somehow going to go away-
