HERMON, Maine — A Stetson man on his way home from night classes in Bangor escaped serious injury Monday night after a large tree limb crashed onto the hood of his 2008 GMC extended cab pickup truck.
The accident happened about 9:12 p.m., Deputy Jay Hallett of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department said Wednesday. Hallett said Roy Jordan, 49, was driving on Union Street in Hermon when just beyond the hill near Butler’s Garage, a large tree limb fell across the road, landing on Jordan’s truck and causing its airbags to deploy.
The downed limb also brought power and cable lines to the ground as it fell, causing outages on one side of Union Street.
“It basically came down across the front of his hood and flattened [the front part of] his cab,” Hallett said.
“I actually heard it happen,” the deputy said, adding that the loud crash sounded “like a pickup hauling a flatbed going over railroad tracks.”
Weather conditions at the time were “clear and cool and quite windy,” he said.
The branch, he said, was large enough to span both travel lanes. It broke off from an even larger tree across the street from where Jordan’s truck was driving.
Hallett said Jordan was able to make his way out of the truck on his own volition. While the motorist was shaken, the only injury he incurred was a cut on his right hand.
Had Jordan been driving faster, Hallett said, “this could easily have been a fatal.”
Hallett said a section of Union Street was closed for about 45 minutes as crews from Central Maine Power and the town of Hermon’s Public Works Department cleared the scene.

Someone was looking out for the driver!
So why did this someone let the tree limb destroy his truck? You get to live but I’m going to cause you to have a very bad night. Not a very nice someone in my opinion.
Refer to wollydevils comment.
I noticed you use the underscore in your handle, Are you trying to say that you feel beneath others? Is that a cry for help?
Your comment is negative and juvenile. Whats going on Kevy, why are you so unhappy that you cannot ever say anything nice?
Because you asked I will explain. Disqus doesn’t allow spaces so I used underscores instead to break up my username but way to read into something that isn’t there.
I also did say something nice. I stated I’m glad he is ok but you seemed to miss that comment and when people say silly things such as someone was looking out for the driver, that to me is very juvenile to me. As if some magical being prevented the man from dying. Sorry, but life doesn’t work that way and Kevy wevy is very happy happy, joy joy.
Thanks for playing.
While I can concede you did say something nice you had to make a snide
remark about what I perceived to be an insult to God or Jesus or whoever
1964awdem was suggesting “someone” to be.
You don’t think it was a bit childish to suggest “Someone” didn’t
warn the driver?
Kevy wevy?! You do have a sense of humor you should bring it out more often
I’ ve decided to help you become a nicer commenting person, my
new goal. I look forward to many future chats at helping you to sound like
the happy person you say you are.
I just want answers from that someone who let him live but destroyed
his truck. Not a very nice someone nor someone who should be praised and worshiped.
Anywho, I have a very long day ahead of me so. Ta ta…
No where is it written neither should one expect that because you believe
in God/Jesus, the great Phonix, Horace the sun god or any other Idol
that life is going to be filled with a wonderful, perfect pain free life.
Actually it’s usually the opposite.
You have a nice day Filled with happy thoughts and words.
I’m glad he is ok but I’m truly surprised this doesn’t happen more often in Maine.
Definitely Kevin, the job we have keeping all these branches away is unbelievable. We get very, very strong wind gusts in this state at any particular time of the day depending where you are. That’s what we call a “widowmaker,” in the woods!
Now this is a true accident not like car accident . this person had no way of knowing that the limb would come down they had no control over it not like car accidents were one of the drivers causes the accident
This man has a guardian angel for sure.
Bangor has to many Old Trees over the streets.. They need to go and plant young trees.
I am sure there was major damage to his undies as well.
those are some high-res pics you got there…
“Had Jordan been driving faster, Hallett said, ‘this could easily have been a fatal.'”
Had Jordan been driving faster, he would’ve gone by the limb before it fell. :-)
