He’s probably the best-known challenger yet to compete for U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud’s seat, but Maine Senate President Kevin Raye still introduces himself to 2nd Congressional District voters in his first television ad of the 2012 campaign.

The 32-second spot describes the Republican from Perry as a problem-solving leader and small-business owner who will break political gridlock in Washington. It started running Wednesday on television stations in Bangor, Portland and Presque Isle, campaign spokesman Rob Caverly said.

“It is about introducing the voters of Maine to Kevin and describes what the campaign is about,” Caverly said Wednesday. “It is a two-fold approach: We want to introduce them to Kevin and let them see the positive approach that we are bringing to this campaign.”

“We are trying to run a positive, issues-based, constructive campaign,” Caverly added.

Michaud spokesman Dan Cashman said the four-term Democrat from East Millinocket also wants to run a positive, issues-based campaign.

“If that is the goal on both sides, that’s fantastic,” Cashman said Wednesday, adding that Michaud likes the idea of a campaign without “name-calling or mudslinging.”

“That’s what we hope to see going forward,” Cashman said.

Michaud plans to air several television commercials soon, said Cashman, who declined to give specifics. The Michaud campaign will run on the congressman’s record, he said.

“Mike Michaud has a great record in Washington fighting for veterans, small businesses and manufacturing, among others,” Cashman said.

Republican 1st Congressional District candidate Jon Courtney also planned to start running campaign spots on local stations Wednesday. Though Caverly declined to describe his candidate as a moderate Republican, Raye’s commercial touts Raye’s 17 years as an aide to U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe.

Snowe’s moderate stance helped her to build a reputation, over 33 years in Congress, as someone eager to build political bridges between moderates from both parties. It also contributed to her decision in February not to seek a fourth term because she felt that political partisanship within the Senate made further work pointless.

The narration to Raye’s commercial said the co-owner of Raye’s Mustard Mill in Eastport “brought Democrats and Republicans together to balance five budgets, reduce debt and encourage job growth.”

“Washington is broken. We need somebody to work to solve problems,” Raye said in the commercial. “That’s what I have done in Augusta. That’s what I will do in Washington.”

Raye fought off a primary challenge from Republican Blaine Richardson of Belfast, who described himself as having “latent tea party tendencies,” to secure the GOP nomination in June. Raye lost a race against Michaud in 2002 before being elected to the Legislature.

Raye’s campaign, which has drawn favorable attention from the national GOP, will not presume that his service in Augusta means he is well-known to voters, Caverly said.

“He is probably more known than a lot of people that could have ran for this, but we still need to introduce him to the district,” Caverly said.

Michaud and U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk will tour the New Balance shoe factory in Norridgewock on Thursday to underline the importance of maintaining trade tariffs, Cashman said.

Raye will visit farms in Turner and surrounding towns to illustrate his support of state-based agriculture, Caverly said.

  1. I was voting for Raye before, but this video solidifies it. I like his compassion for fellow Mainers and the common sense he brings to the table. He’ll be great for the 2nd district down in DC.

    1.  let’s hope he keeps his glasses up on his face where they should be and his pants up and where they should be.

    2. His “compassion” is for ALEC and the Koch Brothers.  He was so “compassionate” he voted for every rotten piece of garbage LeBUFFOON, doing ALEC’s bidding, tried to force on this state.  He stood there and ranted about how he wanted to kill same-day voting registration when he used it himself and tried to push the LIE about “fraud” all just to try to suppress voters, even when it was HIS party who brought in same-day registration unanimously in the 70’s. (That was when Republicans were sane. Now they are TeaRadicals. Nothing more.) The ReLIARcan Party is enough to make ANYONE want to throw up.

      1. What is your connection between Raye and ALEC? ALEC is an organization that conservative minded legislators CAN join, but in Maine there are only a few members who attend. Unlike the Progressive States Network where LIBERAL minded legislators can attend and get ideas, I am sure you don’t have a problem with that organization. And I repeat just to be clear, what is your evidence that Raye has ever been involved with ALEC other than you dreaming it up.

  2. Michaud’s been in there too long with little results.  Time for a change in direction.  I’m glad Raye is running.

  3. Not what we need in Washington another Republican that does nothing to help the economy.  Raye couldn’t even save jobs in his own Senate District as President of the Senate when he let the nursing home close without helping.  He’s all about profits for big Corporations not the workers.

    1. Kevin worked his tail off to save the nursing home here in Calais. If it had not been for his leadership the the nursing home would have quietly closed and nobody outside of downeast Maine would have heard a thing about it.  Kevin at least got us a hearing with DHHS and the attention of the press.Joe Cassidy
      Mayor of Calais

      1. He worked his tail off and got… what… a hearing? If you think that’s effective leadership, Calais needs a new mayor.

        1. so Raye should have been able to make a private corporation do what ever he wants them to do?  i’m surprised you can even log on to a computer.

  4. Oh sure, Mean Mr Mustard is gonna waddle into Washington to “Fix it”. He should just waddle back to Washington County and try to “fix” his broken party.

  5. His friends should tell him that he has no chance of winning before he blows any more of his savings on this.

      1. Do what republicans tell everyone else to do.Get a job!Should be easy , the r’s are all for creating jobs, minimum wage jobs.Well, not even those in Maine.Perhaps he should go to work for that $5.00 an hour training wage the r’s tried to pass.

  6. Kevin Raye is a gifted man. His leadership in the Maine State Senate has been uncommonly effective. Not only did he get some major reforms through the legislature, at the end of the process, members of both parties still liked and respected him.

An effective member of Congress needs to be able to move things ahead. He or she is an important “face” for Maine. Raye is articulate and knows how Washington works. Yet his years there didn’t “ruin” him, like it does to so many in politics.

As far as Mike Michaud goes, I see no leadership qualities in him. Maine only gets 2 Congress members. Let’s get someone with some energy and vision representing us.

If Kevin Raye doesn’t deliver, we can vote him out in 2 years. But let’s not keep re-electing Michaud. Maine deserves better.

    1. RAye is a liar. I listened to him give an hour-long address to the senate in which he spoke nothing but lies, presented as truth. I know this because I am intimately familiar with the issue he was discussing, including specific cases. He is not worth the paper I wipe my butt with, the man is scum. You are either a paid shill or a member of his family, because no one capable of independent thought would ever vote for him or claim any reason to respect such a low person.

    2. You know how to present the  frosting, but you forgot to tell us about the cake. Many of us know kevin, and your painting of him is a bit glossy. Maybe you are banking on the second district not knowing the difference. Michard know’s veterans issues. Tell us all about about kevin’s contribution.

  7. Raye is a LeBUFFOON stooge and water boy and LeBUFFOON’s fellow corporate toadie who could care less about the people and cares only about the likes of the Koch Brothers.  He stood there on the floor of the Senate and DISGUSTINGLY argued about how great an idea it was to kill same-day voter registration when he himself had used it.  LIAR. Nothing at all but another disgusting and sickening right wing corporate shill LIAR. I wouldn’t vote for this ALEC-loving corporate toadie for all the tea in China.

  8. We really need someone like this to dig deeply into the system to enrich their lives, and then maybe some of the good stuff will rub off on us.

    OBAMA 2012!!!

  10. I’ll wait and see just what his ad say’s and then I’ll look into his voting record. With Mike Michaud I know what’s there. With Raye no one knows what’s there. And given the current GOP trend toward selling a Candidate by ad’s, and nothing else ( and most importantly NO WRITTEN PLAN OR A HISTORY OF THEIR RECORD ) Raye had better have more than his whoozit’s out there for all to see if he hopes to make a serious run for the 2nd District seat. And if he decides to run on his Maine Senate record then he might as well quit now. What Maine needs is a real, on paper and signature affixed, plan for the State’s economy to recover and develop. Romney, and to a certain extent Obama, have yet to show us what they are working toward. A written plan provides both guidance and a standard of measurement toward acheiving goal’s. Say that in Augusta and you’re seen as a radical nutcase. Fine, label me. But at the end of the day what does anyone have to use to measure just what and how effective their Rep’s and Senator’s have been ? Come to think of it, when has Augusta, and DC even, bothered to see that simple fact ? Maybe it’s time it was seen and used. Any taker’s ?

  11. Kevin Raye. Washington County. Republican Caucuses. Republican Convention.  Already know enough about Kevin Raye to make a decision. Actions speak louder than words.

  12. “Washington is broken.”

Mr. Raye, Washington County is broken — thanks to your inept “leadership” over these many years.

  13. I would have voted for pocket lint over “Mike Useless Michaud” but Kevin Raye does know more about business than Mike, but then again an earthworm would know more than Mike….

Mike has had YEARS to do ANYTHING, but he hasn’t, the Katahdin Region is suffering and the most that was done came from Paul LePage, not Michaud…!

    I’m Voting Raye for Congress
At least Kevin knows how to write a paycheck, Mike only knows how to cash them…

  14. Kevin Raye is a tremendous voice for his district in the Maine Senate, and will be a stronger voice for Maine once he is elected!

  15. Does anyone know how Raye feels on the Ryan budget and did he sign the Norquist pledge?
Tried to find the answers but could not.
