WINSLOW, Maine — A Winslow man is facing charges after he assaulted a family member early Tuesday morning, according to police.
The female victim came to the Winslow police station just after midnight and reported that Matthew Woodard, 31, had assaulted her, Winslow police Chief Jeff Felanson said.
“At that time the officers could see a bruised lip, swelling to her face and blood on her jacket,” Felanson said.
The woman stated that Woodard was intoxicated, and an argument led to the assault, according to Felanson.
“He punched her in the face and head several times,” Felanson said.
The victim managed to escape Woodard and report the incident to police, Felanson said, at which point Lt. Josh Veilleux and Officer David Lefferts called for an ambulance before going to Woodard’s residence to arrest him.
Police took Woodard into custody, and in the residence were empty beer cans, marijuana and a marijuana pipe, Felanson said.
Woodard was booked into the Kennebec County Jail on charges of domestic violence assault, a Class D misdemeanor, and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, both Class E misdemeanors.
The victim was treated at Thayer Hospital and released. Woodard’s first court appearance is Oct. 11 in Waterville District Court.

And here I thought that people who smoke m.j were peaceful types.
Add alcohol to it and that’s obviously not always the case.
M.J. does not make you violent, alcohol does. You do know the Reefer Madness wasn’t a documentary, right?
Maybe that is the common response, but not always. I have known people who became more mellow when they were drinking and never violent to anyone. I have also known potheads who were irritable and even violent when they smoked. I do not believe that everyone responds in the exact same way to a drug.
I have never seen anyone get violent after smoking weed, ever. In fact , it has the opposite effect every single time. I used to be a door man in a big nightclub in the bay area of California. I could go on all night about guys getting ten foot tall and bullet proof on liquor. We should outlaw liquor and legalize weed. The world we become a much, much more harmonious place overnight.
You are correct Mimi, no one reacts the same way to anything really. I can’t even comment on legalizing “weed”. I would not want to encounter anyone under the influence of anything behind the wheel yet these yahoos will tell us it doesn’t affect driving either. What a load of baloney.
