SKOWHEGAN, Maine — A Fairfield man who allegedly head-butted a police officer and was charged with domestic violence terrorizing was one of 12 people indicted by the Somerset County grand jury on Thursday.

John O’Connor, 48, was indicted on seven charges stemming from two separate incidents.

At about 10 p.m. Sept. 2, Fairfield police and a Maine state trooper responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at O’Connor’s Newhall Street apartment.

“He had been drinking, which is a violation of his condition of release [from a previous domestic violence incident],” Fairfield Police Chief John Emery said Friday.

Police managed to get handcuffs on O’Connor, but he head-butted both Fairfield officers, said Emery. One of the head-butts was severe enough to break the officer’s glasses.

“He hit him directly in the face,” said Emery.

O’Connor was taken to Somerset County Jail in Madison.

Emery said Fairfield police have been dealing with O’Connor on a regular basis.

“I’ve been here 27 years and his name has been familiar for 27 years,” said Emery. “He’s got quite a history.”

O’Connor was indicted on charges of assault on an officer, assault, refusing to submit to arrest, criminal mischief, violating conditions of release and terrorizing in connection with the Sept. 2 incident.

He also was indicted on a charge of domestic violence terrorizing in connection with a July 24 incident. He was out on bail on that charge when the Sept. 2 incident occurred.
