ROCKLAND, Maine — Three Rockland residents were arrested Thursday afternoon following an investigation into them buying bath salts on the Internet and selling them in the community, police said.
Arrested for felony possession of the synthetic hallucinogenic drug known as bath salts were Allan Boody, 27, and Corey Conway, 41. Boody and Conway also were charged with violating terms of their probation for prior drug violations, according to a news release from the Maine Department of Public Safety. The prior drug convictions are what elevated the bath salts possession charges to felonies.
Hillary Hannan, 24, was charged with possession of bath salts and also was arrested on warrants for failure to pay fines, according to the news release.
The arrests were made Thursday as drug agents, joined by officers from the Rockland Police Department, Maine State Police and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, conducted two separate investigations into Rockland residents buying synthetic hallucinogenic drugs online and then using and reselling them in Rockland, according to the news release.
Conway was arrested at his apartment on Broadway, and Hannan and Boody were taken into custody at their residence on North Main Street.
Seized from both locations were about five grams of bath salts, with a combined street value of $5,000. Agents also seized Suboxone and oxycodone pills.
The trio was taken to the Knox County Jail in Rockland. They are scheduled to make an initial court appearance Friday afternoon in Rockland District Court.
MDEA Supervisor James Pease said Friday the trio had been suspected of buying the bath salts for several months but the type of synthetic drug being purchased did not become illegal until Sept. 1. Pease said the manufacturers alter design of drugs to evade laws.
Why call bath salts synthetic hallucinogenic drugs instead of simply calling them hallucinogenic drugs? They are not synthetic drugs at all……they are very real hallucinogenic drugs. Perhaps they are made to be synthetic methamphetamine, perhaps synthetic cocaine…..but they are very real hallucinogenic drugs.
Synthetic simply means that they’re entirely man-made, vs a naturally occurring hallucinogen, such as psilocybin mushrooms.
They are synthetic hallucinogenic drugs, IE made in a laboratory (or kitchen sink), from chemicals, they are not a natural substance, or something found in nature.
There are natural hallucinogenics – Mushrooms that cause hallucinations are an example of a natural hallucinogenic.

Hopefully the MDEA will also sweep what the locals call “the Salt Flats”, also known as the Coughlan St. Apts (spelling?) just off Rankin St.; the local open sales are a joke amongst the residents there.
