MASARDIS, Maine — Two men escaped serious injury on Thursday after a moose entered the roadway and ended up causing damage to two vehicles.
State police Sgt. Josh Haines said Friday that the incident took place at approximately 5 a.m. on Route 11.
According to Haines, Steven Cyr of Ashland was southbound in his 2005 Chevy pickup when a moose crossed in front of his vehicle.
Cyr struck and killed the moose in the southbound lane but veered into the northbound lane and stopped his vehicle in the roadway.
As he got out to check the damage, Travis Blair of Ashland was northbound in his 2007 Nissan.
Cyr saw him and attempted to flag him down but Blair was unable to see him due to the fog and low light conditions.
Haines said that Blair’s vehicle hit Cyr’s vehicle head on.
Air bags deployed in Blair’s vehicle and he suffered a broken kneecap and other minor injuries.
He was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
He was taken from the scene by the Ashland Ambulance Department to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle.
Cyr did not require medical attention.
Trooper Shawn Whalen investigated the crash and was assisted at the scene by the Ashland and Masardis Fire Departments.

Seriously! Who leaves their vehicle in the other lane on an extremely foggy day on a road that is notorious for accidents that result in deaths. I understand that he hit a moose and all, but it clearly states that he was not hurt and got out to assess the damages!?! I’m the wife of a man who drives this road to and from work everyday! Just plain stupid!
If he had stayed in the vehicle then he would been hit? It stopped in the North bound lane opposite of his driving lane so he was smart to get out.
What I meant was why didn’t he move the vehicle before he got out? Although my husband just informed me that this reporting is inaccurate and he didn’t get out to assess the damage, he got out to flag the other driver down to warn him. Apparently his vehicle was demolished from hitting the moose, so I guess he isn’t stupid after all, just poor timing! But from the way BDN made it sound, it could have been prevented when in actuality it maybe couldn’t have been.
Snap judgements will get you every time!
Why because I had to get “accurate” reporting from my husband and not the paper that should have either gotten it right in the first place or worded it more correctly so that it didn’t sound like it wasn’t 100% the guys fault!
“Accurate reporting”??? What was incorrect about the article??? Could it have included more details? Sure. But was it WRONG?????
You can over analyze anything. I constantly have to tell myself, self, stop thinking. There are people who are just analytical. It’s part of your gene makeup, or too much caffeine. Don’t worry about it, there is not a blogger on here that doesn’t do the same once in a while. And there is not a blogger that doesn’t point out others mistakes. No mention of the poor moose.
Not knowing what the first version said, I also read it as he stopped in the northbound lane:
“Cyr struck the moose in the southbound lane but veered into the northbound lane and stopped his vehicle in the roadway.”
Not ended up there, but stopped there. And who knows how much of the damage was from the moose and how much was from the crash. Anyone simply reading the article would take it the way you originally did (me).
He would have been smarter to get it off the road.
Did you think that it could be possible that…..oh wait, never mind, NO, you didn’t think before you spoke.
If you read it to be the way they wrote it (which was inaccurate and I admitted that I was wrong) then yes it would have been stupid. You obviously are just looking to pick fights, which is about 92% of the readers on this website
As are you!! I did not make any assumptions based on the poorly written article. I used a little common sense (car – moose collisions usually demolish the car) and determined that he probably couldn’t move the car. I didn’t need a reporter to tell me that to know that it was likely the case.
If he had stayed in the vehicle then he would been hit? It stopped in the North bound lane opposite of his driving lane so he was smart to get out.
Sh– happens. When driving in moose country, expect moose in the road. I travel from Rockwood to Jackman and Greenville quite often, and moose are always on my mind. Lucky no one was critically hurt. Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery to Mr. Blair.
That stretch from Greenville to Jackman is full of Moose, but you still see the collisions. You still see the Dead Moose just off the road.
Wish more people would think like Gary52.

Moose fried rice for all
People drive crazy fast on 11 considering the Moose, deer, and Logging Trucks.
Patten through Ashland and people fly. People will pass you like it’s nothing.
This is General statement.
MooseheadLake, people drive crazy fast all the way to Fort Kent from Patten on route #11,,, come sit on my front porch :-/ log trucks are the worst !!!
And Blair wasn’t wearing his seatbelt. Duh.
“I’ll never have an accident, I don’t need it”.
BDN…quit with the hype in the headlines…it was not a truck, it was a pickup…..and is this really news worthy?
