A mortally wounded 21-year-old was found in the Interstate 295 breakdown lane in Portland on Wednesday night.
Officers found the victim in the breakdown lane on the southbound side of the highway, near exit 8 and adjacent to the walking path by Tukey’s Bridge, about 9:47 p.m., according to Brad Nadeau, a spokesperson for the Portland Police Department.
Police immediately began providing first aid to the victim, who was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where they succumbed to their injuries, Nadeau said Thursday morning.
A suspect has been taken into custody.
The Maine medical examiner’s office was scheduled to perform an autopsy Thursday morning to determine the victim’s cause and manner of death.
The victim isn’t being publicly identified as police work to notify their family.
The investigation is ongoing.
