A Freeport motorcyclist died Wednesday evening when he crashed on Interstate 295.

Edmund Goodman, 78, was riding a 2016 Indian Springfield motorcycle north on I-295, near mile marker 18 in Freeport, about 6:47 p.m. when he left the road and went onto a grassy shoulder and hit a raised crossover, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

That caused the motorcycle to overturn many times and Goodman was thrown from the bike, Moss said Thursday morning.

Several passersby with medical training stopped to help Goodman, who died from his injuries at the scene.

Goodman likely suffered a “medical event” just before he went off the road, according to Moss.

The crash remains under investigation.
