BELFAST, Maine — Police released a grainy, black-and-white photo Monday afternoon of a man they say has been stealing firewood from an Oak Hill Road resident and are asking for help identifying him.

Pictures of the man were captured at night at the end of August using a game camera, according to Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham of the Belfast Police Department. They had set up the camera after the resident complained that someone had been taking his cut, split and dried firewood.

A series of photos shows the man placing the firewood in the trunk of a Nissan Sentra that has a Bruins sticker on the rear bumper, Cunningham said.

“It’s somebody’s firewood. it would be like stealing oil out of your tank,” Cunningham said. “We’re in the northeast. People need their firewood.”

He had no estimated value of the firewood, but did say that cut, split and seasoned wood is selling for more than $200 a cord.

Police believe it is likely that the alleged wood thief does not live far away from the Oak Hill Road residence.

Anyone with information about the alleged wood thief is asked to call Belfast police at 338-2040.

      1. At least we’ll never have to worry about seeing him outside a Wal-Mart with a sign reading: WILL WORK FOR WOOD.

    1. what he does, is take 10 pieces or so at a time and then takes them to his daughters house within 5 minutes of this location.  it is a boston bruins sticker on the bumper.

  1. Anyone want to guess how long it will take the thief to get the bumper sticker off the car. A smart detective usually keeps a significant identification marker under his hat but then this one has never been known for being that bright!

    1. Could one hoard the wood that would be necessary to fill a Nissan necessarily full enough if the Nissan is necessary to fill with someone elses wood?

    2. I’m not sure of the year of the Sentra but I would have to say (just the trunk right?) filling it as tightly as possible … 8-10 trips?  lol  And you better like bottoming out.

  2. You ask yourself…..Why? If he’s stealing wood you know very well that he’s stealing other things with his 3/4 ton Nissan. What process of thought makes a dude steal something that covers our whole state? I would dare say the MOST abundant natural growing substance in Maine. Look for a LAZY dude! Like that narrows it down. You know when he’s loaded at night like that his low beams look like highs and his high beams hit the big dipper. Maybe he’s selling it on the AT to hikers or a campsite somewhere? Well at least we know he’s warm and comfy :)

    1. I’d look for this car to appear at the local food pantry ! If this man is lazy enough to steal from someone elses hard work then it stands to reason he steals from the needy also.

      1. He’s the guy that gets a free Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner from a dozen different churches-that happens all the time.

  3. Soo funny! Too bad we didn’t have a pic with is eyes lit up like a dear with that hunter IR camera. If we can’t catch ’em at least we have their pics. and and some info. The thief  knows that when he visit’s the poor person again that his picture is being taken. Although, maybe he never watches the news or reads a paper.
