COLUMBIA FALLS, Maine — A two-vehicle collision Monday evening on Route 1 in Columbia Falls left three people involved hospitalized, two with serious injuries.
According to Maine State Police Trooper Reid Bond, a 1993 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Bruce Dawes, 44, of Harrington was headed eastbound when it crossed the centerline and struck a 2010 Subaru Impreza driven by Carrie Greaves, 49, of Cherryfield as she was headed westbound. A passenger in Greaves’ vehicle, Renita Grover, 54, of Milbridge, was among those injured.
Bond said Grover was transported to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth, while Greaves was transported to Down East Community Hospital in Machias with injuries that were not life-threatening. Dawes also was taken by ambulance to the Machias hospital before being airlifted to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. First responders used the Jaws of Life to extricate all three from the two vehicles involved.
Grover was treated for her injuries and released from Maine Coast Memorial Hospital Tuesday morning. Condition reports on Greaves and Dawes were not available late Tuesday afternoon.
Bond said Dawes was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, which was reported at 7:18 p.m. The two women involved were wearing seat belts. Bond said it has yet to be determined if drugs or alcohol were involved. The accident remains under investigation.
The accident closed Route 1 for about three hours, with normal traffic being restored at approximately 10:30 p.m., Bond said.
Among those responding were firefighters from Addison, Columbia Falls and Harrington.

No details but the license plate number in the pic?? What if this person has family who has no idea what has happened?? I dont think a picture was necessary for what you have for a story….my goodness. Not a way a family member wants to find out these things. Hope and pray those involved are ok.
wow quick to post the car picture. I hope all the families have been notified since you didnt blur the license plate. It’s HORRIBLE to find out bad news online.
Ripped the roof off the car huh? Sure looks like a JAWS job to me. That is how we typically will open up a vehicle. We use 2 relief cuts and a long solid metal bar where the roof needs to bend and then lift it and fold it back. It’d be quite a stunt to open it up like that as a result of a collision. Look at those nice cuts on the A and B post, yea that DEFINITELY was torn off in a collision…NOT. Once again, BDN reporters reporting on what they don’t have a clue about and filling in the fictitious facts because it sure makes a great story. Oh, good form not obscuring the plate also.
According to the RCC dispatcher on the police scanner, there was entrapment and the JAWS were needed at the scene. The “collision” certainly “ripped” that car roof off very neatly!
The bangor daily news is really trying anything now a days to sell a paper…accidents ripping roofs off almost perfect wow!
or have people like us visit and complain about the reporting we get for free…just saying
Speedy recovery to all.
Bruce Dawes was not wearing a seat belt and he crossed the center line causing a horrific accident to two otherwise traffic-abiding citizens. I hope he gets sued to oblivion, but the reality is he probably has nothing of value.
Really?
I think that it is a little ridiculous that the minute a car accident happens that the damn news reporter has to be there right in everyones way and taking pictures and posting them on here and releasing information before the people who are in the accidents family know I was a first responder last night I helped extricate them out and My comments to it all is for the damn news to stay out of it and not post pictures everywhere.
I think its ok for the news ppl to be there..but get the facts first before posting any news, names or pics..
That’s ok, maybe you’d like to rewrite the first amendment.
I would like to take the time to remind every one of you that the next report could be your daughter, son and or other family member. please be respectful and think about how you post on here and whether it would offend you if you were involved. I am discusted with the fact that these comments. Also if the Bdn didn’t put it up everyone would be wondering why they didn’t. I am glad to know that there was some facts in the case and thank you to bangor daily news for reporting stuff downeast. I know these persons and please keep this in mind. speedy recovery to all.
