AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine residents are getting some good news at the gas pump.
Price-monitoring website MaineGasPrices.com reports Monday that the average retail cost of a gallon of gasoline has fallen nearly eight cents in the past week to $3.94.
That’s still 13 cents above the national average, however.
Prices in Maine are still more than 33 cents per gallon higher than on the same day a year ago, and almost a dime higher than a month ago.
The national average has increased almost nine cents per gallon during the last month and stands 29 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.
Plummets? 8 cent drop is a plummet? Right. I get it.
I wonder if it will be skyrocket when it goes up 10 cents next week?

Pricing gasoline in tenths of a cent might have made sense when gas sold for 18 cents a gallon in the 1940s(when our currency was worth a lot more than it is now), but for years I’ve tried to figure out why retailers still cling to the 9-tenths-of-a-cent nonsense when gas is now $3.50-$4.00 per gallon. On another note, it’s time to get real and talk of increases or decreases in terms of percentages – an 8 cent decrease on $4.00 gas is only 2%. Like you, I wouldn’t call that decrease a plummet.
Here in the Katahdin area the gas prices are holding steady. The business owners jack their prices up when everyone else does. But when gas prices start dropping every where else, the business stick it to us a week longer.

There is very little connection between the supply and demand economic model touted by the GOP and the reality of wanton greed in an unregulated investment market.
The price is still too high for most of us to afford. My housemates and I just use our vehicles for driving to and from work or other necessary trips. I remember when families used to go for Sunday drives. Who can afford that now?
the price goes down .08 and the word plummet is used. It makes it sound like it really went down a lot. (NOT) When has been over 4.00 .08 is not what i would consider plummeting.

As before, the President doesn’t have anything to do with current fuel prices. Romney wouldn’t either if he were (heaven forbid) in the Oval Office.
How about the gas price plummets to $2.25 a gallon? I’d be OK with that. And stay away from Big Apple in Brewer, love the fact that they advertise their “cash” price on their billboard and when you pull in the price on the pump is 5 cents a gallon higher.
I worked for an establishment made us call the gas dealer every morning for the latest price. What ever they were asking, we then adjusted the price on the pumps. In other words if the owner bought 10,000 gallons of gas last week at 3.00 a gallon and the price rose since delivery we made a huge profit on the gas we already bought. Of course the reverse was true if the price went down we lost money. But considering the prices rose more than dropped the owner made good money.
Did they drop the price as quickly as they raised it? Or did they wait a few days before lowering prices?
That’s funny 8 cents is a plummet but diesel “increased” 15 cents in a few days crickets please! What a joke this economy is.
Diesel has been 15 cents up for 2-3 weeks, rose with the gasoline prices. It hasn’t come down that I’ve seen.
Currently in Ohio right now. And 3 stations in the town I am in is currently $3.459 a gallon. I understand taxes and such makes a difference, but nearly half a dollar??? Something stinks.
