WARREN, Maine — A 66-year-old former Northport man serving time at the Maine State Prison for 2008 gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact convictions died Friday at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Raymond Tucker, who was an inmate at the prison in Warren, died about 5:45 p.m., a Maine Department of Corrections spokeswoman said Friday night in a news release.

In accordance with department policy and Attorney General’s Office protocols, the Maine State Police and the state medical examiner were notified and both are reviewing the death, said Associate Corrections Commissioner Jody Breton.

The news release did not indicate the cause of Tucker’s death.

At the time of his death, Tucker had served roughly 3½ years of an 18-year sentence — with all but eight years suspended — for gross sexual assault and a concurrent five-year sentence for unlawful sexual contact, Breton said.

According to a news story from the Bangor Daily News archives, Tucker, Northport’s longtime animal control officer, was convicted by a jury in Waldo County Superior Court of sexually assaulting a young girl.

The assaults took place in Northport in 2004 and 2005, when the victim was 8 and 9 years old.

  1. I am sure that other people died at hospitals throughout Maine on the same day. Why does this doucebag get a BDN article complete with photo? Who gives a rat’s arse about a 66 year old inmate dying? Is this the most newsworthy story of the day? Come on BDN……hire some journalists and write some stories about things that are really importnant in Maine!

    1.  Life is hard for a child predator in jail. The fact that the BDN wrote a story makes one think there is something we are missing.

      1.  Probably not. Anytime a person dies in police custody (whether they’ve just been arrested, or are an inmate like this man), there is a full blown investigation into the death. Doesn’t matter if it’s natural causes (heart attack), suicide, or the person has been ill for some time (cancer, etc). BDN reports on such investigations, and the reasons behind them (a dead inmate in this case).

  2. I agree. There has to be more news worthy events going om than some child molester dying in a local hospital, actually it wasnt even local it was Portland…Hey BDN, did you know that my grandfather, who has been dead for 20+ years was a retired Merchant Marine turned lobester fisherman and that his boat now sits in front of Ruth and Wimpy’s Restaurant in Hancock? I think thats a pretty cool story, just saying…

  3.  It’s not that the BDN finds this guy’s death any more important than any other person who has ever died in Maine.
