WOODLAND, Maine — A suspect has been charged in connection with a Sept. 22 home invasion that sent him to the hospital with gunshot wounds.
Charged is Mark Crouch, 36, of Woodland who was arrested Friday in connection with last weekend’s home invasion and burglary, according to Aroostook County Sheriff James Madore Saturday morning.
He is facing charges of aggravated criminal mischief, a Class C felony; assault, a Class C felony; and criminal mischief, a Class D misdemeanor, Madore said.
Crouch was recently released from Eastern Maine Medical Center, where Madore said he was recovering from his wounds.
Madore would not comment on the type of weapon used, the nature of the injuries or who fired the shots. Officials have not released the name of the homeowner or that individual’s involvement in the shooting.
“We are still investigating and we still have more interviews to conduct,” Madore said. “Up until now we did not have enough to charge him.”
Earlier this week Madore confirmed the altercation took place at a New Sweden Road home early Saturday morning.
According to the department, a homeowner in Woodland called 911 on Saturday to report that someone had kicked in the door to his home. That person then reportedly entered the home and was shot.
Since then, rumors have been running wild in the small Aroostook County community.
The injured man was taken to Cary Medical Center in Caribou and then to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
Crouch was able to post bail and according to Madore is continuing to recover from his gunshot wounds at his residence.
There are numerous restrictions connected to the bail, including orders to stay away from certain individuals, but Madore declined to provide additional details.
The case is being investigated by Detective Ross McQuade working with the Aroostook District Attorney’s office.
Crouch is scheduled to make his initial court appearance on Nov. 6 in Caribou District Court.

And he is out on bail!!
Only good thing is the homeowner had a weapon and used it. This needs to happen more often where the perpetrator is injured and not the other way around. In Thomaston they told people to leave their spotlights on all night to prevent burglaries. Never should it come to this point in peace loving Maine. We need to say “NO MORE!!”.
“Alleged” invader.
America : Innocent until proven guilty, beyond a reasonable doubt.
In a court of law.
Very true! If had broken into my home there wouldn’t have been a trial. Shoot for center mass= no trial!
Double tap.
One must practice proper gun control :)
Proper gun control? Is that; Wait until the intruder beats you, gets the gun away from you, and shoots you first? Is that the kind of gun control you would have implemented if put to the same test? It’s easy to say what you might do until it happens to you. I’m all about gun safety and proper control of the gun when a crime is being committed against others. This incident just reinforces to me that small town people such as Woodland need to know how to protect themselves, their homes, and their families from people like this. The last thing I would ever do or what to see is someone being hurt, but self defense is often necessary.
More practice means a better grouping to the center mass and I do practice and keep my BFG very handy as when police are minutes away and seconds count ! We live in a rural area and am very aware of protecting me and mine ..
I would dare say that they have the right guy, considering he is the one with the gunshot wound.
Now that is an intelligent assumption.
Alleged? I find that odd based on what the articles say. Innocent? Now that part is funny! LOL Innocent until proven guilty, but in this case Guilty until proven NOT innocent…
Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.
No apologies necessary ;-)
This guy has to register as a sexual offender for the rest of his life. My understanding is that he JUST got out of jail for that offense, and then he kicked in that guy’s door. Why is this guy on the loose? If he’s well enough to be out of the hospital he is well enough to be back behind bars.

If he is guilty for home invasion and burglary, he should get life, if he lives. This is a double major offense and cannot be tolrated in Maine.
Once again, the Maine justice system shows how impotent it is. Is there a single judge in Maine who has a set?
Pretty simple I figure. If they dug a bullet out of him, match the bullet up with the gun that the homeowner used. If the bullet matched the rifling, then you’ve got very solid proof. Then it’s just a matter of deciding how much time this guy is going to get.
If he must register as a sex offender, might the homeowner be a previous victim. Maybe a domestic incident involving his um wife? Lots of possibilities…
Let’s just hope the justice system gets this right and sends him back to prison where he belongs so this community can sleep a little better at night. Those who allow themselves to be in a relationship are only putting themselves and their own children at risk. (his girlfriend who is protecting him). Where’s DHHS and child protective services on this one? Knowing his past, why would anyone put their own children in his path?
Mark Crouch was convicted in 2003 for the sexual assault and savage beating of his girlfriend. If memory serves he was sentenced to 30 years. Out already? That right there is one of the biggest problems with our justice system.
I don’t know the whole story, but if he was sentenced to 30 years and he’s out already, he would then be on probation. Right? He should be in jail right now on a probation hold. He was convicted on a sexual assault? The homeowner should have shot him in his tallywhacker!!
:)
“How am I gonna stop some big, mean mother hubbard from tearing me a structurally superfluous new behind? Answer: Use a gun. And if that don’t work, use more gun.”
is it just me or does the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Dept. seem to be struggling and/or bungling this investigation?
No! As you can see I am a historian and have knowledge of history!
I read your previous post and saw nothing wrong with it! You should have left it. :) On the other hand, BDN needs to take off moviebuff95’s post, because that is a personal attack….just sayin…..
Thank you! I did flag it as inappropriate. I was only putting a statement out there. I didn’t make an accusation. Just awareness about this man’s past. It wasn’t my intentions to offend anyone. I’m not the one who should be ashamed. If I was either of those, I wouldn’t have removed it. Thanks for your support.
You are welcome! I have flagged it, also…….last night. You’re right, you just made a statement, no accusations, no finger pointing…nothing. Oh well, it takes all kinds to make the world go ’round, right? :)
Thanks again! I usually get a notification on my phone about replies to my comments. I have lots of hobbies and keep very busy, but like so many others my smart phone is my lifeline as I don’t have a land line phone. I wasn’t trying to be insensitive by my post. My apologies to all who may have been offended.
