NORTHPORT, Maine — A Northport man who allegedly head-butted his girlfriend Friday night after the two got into an argument has been arrested.

Christopher Lawrence, 30, and his girlfriend began fighting when the two went to Belfast to pick up his child, according to police reports. The fight escalated, with both parties later telling police that the other person had been physically violent.

After returning home, the Prescott Hill Road woman went to a neighbor’s house to call 911, telling authorities that Lawrence had destroyed her cell phone.

“By the time the officers got there, she had a big lump on her forehead, and her eye was already turning black,” Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office said.

Although both Lawrence and the woman said they had been head-butted by the other person, police concluded Lawrence was the primary aggressor.

“He had one scratch on his arm,” Trafton said.

Lawrence was arrested and charged with assault, terrorizing and violating a probation hold. After booking at Waldo County Jail in Belfast, he is being held at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, with bail set at $500 cash or $1,000 surety, according to jail officials.

  1. I  am not saying the guy didn’t do It. but These domestic violence laws are out of hand epsecily in mass. people are getting arrested for yelling at each  other.or swearing at each other.I can understand physical contact if there is proof. but having the women say he hit me with no proof and the guy gets arrested and convited thats unconstitunial. and i believe thats one of the reasons for so many domestic homicides. and the goverment won’t addmit it. Maine laws are becoming like mass.

    1. The reason that domestic violence all too often winds up with one person or both dead is that the abused person finally decides to leave because enough is enough, and the abuser kills him or her and sometimes themselves. Holding people accountable is not what causes the deaths. If anything, it is the failure of the system to hold violent offenders accountable.

  2. When did this head butting fad begin? I thought that was a billy goat thing, not a people thing!!
