LEWISTON, Maine — Angered by comments Lewiston Mayor Robert Macdonald made to state and international television reporters, two Maine-based organizations are calling for him to resign.

The Lewiston office of the Maine People’s Alliance is gathering signatures and online support for a petition it plans to present to City Hall later this week.

Gen Lysen, the lead organizer for the MPA’s Lewiston-based Androscoggin County chapter, said the group collected hundreds of signatures from Lewiston residents and at least 1,000 had signed an online petition asking Macdonald to step down.

Meanwhile, the African Diaspora Institute based in Portland also called for Macdonald’s resignation during a Monday evening press conference outside Lewiston City Hall.

The petition would not have any legal standing and the city’s charter does not contain any provision for recalling a mayor.

Macdonald drew sharp criticism last week for comments he made, first to the British Broadcasting Corp. in a documentary aired in September and then to WGME television in Portland when he attempted to clarify those comments.

Messages left for Macdonald at his office and home were not returned Monday evening.

Macdonald has said his comments, which seemed to be aimed at Lewiston’s growing population of Somali immigrants, have been blown out of proportion, but others have said the comments are just the latest in a long series of divisive things the mayor has either said or written.

Lysen said that pattern includes portions of columns Macdonald has published in the Twin City TIMES, a free newspaper that is circulated once a week in the community.

“The first request we make is for an apology,” Lysen said. “However, given how since before he was elected he’s been making disparaging remarks about immigrants and this has been a pretty constant attitude coming from his office we are asking for his resignation as well.”

Macdonald has written a weekly column, titled “Enough is Enough” since he first took office in January 2012. Macdonald’s column did not appear in the latest issue of the newspaper, which came out last Thursday.

Lysen said Maine People’s Alliance members have complained to the publisher about Macdonald’s column but have had no response.

“The mayor’s office shouldn’t be a platform for making these kinds of racist and anti-immigrant statements,” a statement on the MPA’s website reads. “Mayor MacDonald should apologize for his remarks and should resign as mayor so that we can put this behind us and move forward, creating a stronger community together.”

That statement also details some of the things Macdonald has written that the MPA has taken issue with, including a column where Macdonald wrote, in part, “submissive Somali women turn into obnoxious customers at the grocery store cash register.”

On Monday, Lysen called Macdonald’s statements and writing “hate speech, racist and frankly bigoted.” She also said that members of the Somali community were concerned his words would encourage others and even incite violence in the community.

“Folks in the community are worried about what may happen and are feeling like that because we have one of our elected officials encouraging those feelings and those thoughts,” Lysen said. She said many in the Somali community came to Lewiston and Maine because it’s a safe and peaceful place. “And here they are being faced with words that could incite hate and violence,” she said.

On Monday, Laurie Steele, the publisher of Twin City TIMES, said in an email message to the Sun Journal that Macdonald did submit a column for the latest edition but it was not published.

“With the media frenzy surrounding the mayor’s comments, we thought it would be best to let everything settle down,” Steele said. “We want to be clear that the mayor’s comments and columns do not reflect our personal opinions or the editorial position of Twin City TIMES.”

She said the newspaper was not in the habit of censoring opinion columns or letters to the editor.

“TCT still believes in the First Amendment right for citizens to express themselves, even if some of those expressions are considered inflammatory by other citizens who object to them,” Steele said. “While we do not share many of Mayor Macdonald’s opinions, we published his column because it represents a point of view held by many residents of Lewiston. We have received many phone calls and emails urging us to continue running the mayor’s columns.”

Steele said her newspaper would continue to monitor the situation and would decide whether to continue Macdonald’s column.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Dini, African Diaspora Institute’s executive director, said at Monday’s press conference that it was important for Somali immigrants, including those who are American citizens or even born in Maine, to say no to hate speech.

“We don’t want anyone else to defend us, we are actually Mainers and we can speak for ourselves and tell people how we feel,” Dini said.

He said the Macdonald’s statements regarding culture were completely counter to the view of an American melting pot that most Maine people and most immigrants believe in. He also said Macdonald’s latest statement was just one more in a long list of things he has said or written about immigrants in Lewiston.

“I don’t know who he was talking to, but as Somali-Americans, as Mainers, our culture is an American culture that embraces diversity, a culture that defends the First Amendment and everybody’s religious rights and that culture is a melting pot culture and what we call American culture and American values,” Dini said. “So we don’t know who he is talking about.”

  1. he is right this is a melting pot. i am sick of others coming here and being offended if you dont like it leave go to another country and tell them you are offended buy their culture see what happens to you. we now have to say holiday tree instead of christmas tree give me a break

    1. that’s what they do.
they bring their culture with them. they want lewiston to be a “little Somalia”
they’re doing a good job of making it that way.

      1. Somalians are creating a real problem in Lewiston. This guy should have a press release and tell them all to go “pound sand”.

      2.  Was Lewiston better off when it was just “little Quebec?”

This guy made some obnoxious comments and demonstrated in the process that he’s not fit to lead a diverse town.  He needs to go.

        1. Well first off, you are from Bangor apparently so the “He needs to go” comment doens’t apply because you are not a resident of the city he represents. Also never has Lewiston or any part of Lewiston been referred to as “little Quebec.” Seeing as you have never probably been to Lewiston, there is in fact a section of Lewiston that is referred to as “Little Canada” which is fixed between the canal and the river, around the four major mills. I do want to go on to add that I don’t agree with what he said, but I also don’t agree with people who have no idea what they are talking about commenting on something they have no idea about.

          1. You got so hung up on the details (little Quebec vs little Canada) that you seem to have entirely missed the point. I don’t have to be a resident of Lewiston to smell racism when it’s in the air.

          2. He didn’t miss the point.  ILeadInWhat knows exactly what he’s talking about and you don’t.

          3. Haha, no I wasn’t hung up on details, I just figured if you were going to make a statement you should know the facts. His comments were just that, his comments, was he speaking for the entire city, no he was not. You missed my point in that you are not a citizen of Lewiston, therefore you can say “He needs to go” until you’re blue in the face and it won’t make a difference. I personally love how everyone is so quick to pull the race card, whatever the culture (not race) was, I am sure the mayor would say the samething. Question to you, is how can someone hire someone in the United States if they do not speak English? http://www.sunjournal.com/node/230191 That's not being racist in my book that is just being honest. Why are so many foreign companies learning to speak English, such as China? Because that is the primary language that we in the United States use. Just saying.

    2. Doesn’t seem to me that you understand the concept of the phrase “melting pot.” It refers to the idea that “American” culture comes from many different cultures from all over the world, and that here in America all of those cultures have blended together in a “melting pot” to form a unique and strong culture. That we, as Americans, are all stronger and more united because of our great diversity. The “melting pot” idea is not that immigrants come here and completely assimilate to our cultures, but that they add their own, unique culture to our wonderfully varied culture. And so far it’s worked to our benefit.

That christmas tree you’re upset about? That’s a little piece of German culture, which was brought here by German immigrants, and used as a way of remembering the culture of their homeland. Part of the melting pot, one might say.

    3. The Lewiston mayor’s comments made every racist in the State secretly chuckle and say, “Atta boy, Mac.”  It’s an old political tactic, rile up your racist base and claim it wasn’t a racist comment.

Do X, Say Y.  Spin reality to hide what you are.

        1. I’m in Lewiston all the time.  What’s your point?  I see Somali stores where empty storefronts used to be.  I see hundreds of housing units full that used to be empty.  I see a city that was wilting, now growing with the influx of a new energy.  The first generation Somali immigrants that came to this country came for many of the same reasons that our forefathers came.  I suppose it’s only Somalians that are collecting welfare in Lewiston.  Give me a break.

          1. ” I see Somali stores where empty storefronts used to be”
and how exactly did they get the money to start these stores?

            how about our taxdollars.

“I see a city that was wilting, now growing with the influx of a new energy”
really? the only thing that’s growing in that city is the welfare count and the size of their families. lewiston was a dying mill town, and it is now an even worse dead mill town.

          2. I assume you live in Lewiston, because you have attacked people that don’t.  I haven’t seen anyone hate their hometown as much as you do.  If you don’t live there, then I must say that you should reserve judgement.

Oh and by the way, you think OUR tax dollars opened those Somali stores?  Seriously…

          3. AncientLegacy (hmm…wonder what that refers to exactly) makes comments on youtube calling to “round up and kill all Muslims”, so you can basically deduce where he’s coming from.  No point in dealing with someone like him — lost cause.

          4. I live and work in Lewiston. The Somalis are experts at playing this game, period.  The government supplies funds for their little stores, their subsidized apartments, food, and spending money. Some are self sufficient, but the majority are not, because unless you are very wealthy, it’s hard to have a baby every year or so and support your family.  Lewiston attracts many different groups that like the welfare system, and the Somalis are no better or  worse than any of these other groups. Basically, the biggest boost they have given the City is that our school department is expanding at a rapid rate, while most of the other districts in Maine are seeing shrinking enrollment. Meanwhile, the band plays on.

    1. pretty sure he’s not anti-immigrant. He is however against people coming to this country and trying to make it into the country they came from.
Why would you flee your homeland for any reason, then come to a benevolent host country, then try to make your host country just like your old country? complete with tribal conflict and all?

    2. A diaspora is a scattering of people away from their homeland. Fix your problem and go home.

  2. I think the Mayor is correct, They have brought Lewiston to a new low.  They expect everything to be given to them on a silver platter.  I understand that they are not the only problem in Lewiston but they deffinetly are one of the Greatest burdens.  They show no thanks for what they are given and they are given more than most!!!

  3. The Only statement by Mayor MacDonald that is quoted in this article does NOT appear to be a Race ist  verbal attack, but appears to be a statement of description.  The only thing this article does not mention is that this has become a Politically Correct Witch Hunt with the Mayor as the target.  Too much emphasis in our society today in being PC, does not make for friendly neighbors.  I have seen women very rude and demanding at the check outs, women of many nationalities.  Calling them out on their rude behavior is far from being a race ist………..This is a ridiculous snowball now rolling down the mountain of ignorance.   Time to stop the stupidity.

    1. Yea, sure.  White people are NEVER rude in the checkout line.  We should “call them out” every time it happens, which is only when Somali women are involved.

      1. bradygirl, please re read my comment.  I generalized with the word, “Women”.   The Re action from you is a perfect example of how, people see what they want to see and not the whole picture. Ironically when I wrote my comment I visualized from Memory, all, White…………….. hello……………

        1. Hammock, please re-read the article.  Particularly this part:
Macdonald wrote, in part, “submissive Somali women turn into obnoxious customers at the grocery store cash register.”

This is not something that I conjured up or “wanted to see”.  My point is, he is the one who decided that because a woman is Somali, their behavior at the checkout line is worth discussing.  It’s not just “un-PC”, he is pointing out behavior that is not specific to any race and making it specific to the one race he is targeting.  You can apologize for him all you want.

          1. Thanks for telling me to read the article again.  The Sun Journal writer of this article Only printed one statement by Mayor MacDonald and as a result the readers have no clue as to what the context of that statement originated.  That context would be of great significance I think and should have been included in the article.   The damage is done and thus we now have a snowball of jurors who have decided the mayor is guilty of not being PC about Somali women.  This has been blown way out of proportion and needs to get cleared up asap.  Maybe one day people will learn to respect each other, but that would only be in a perfect world.

          2. Fair enough.  Can you provide the significant context?

Also, the mayor knows that the Somali issue has been a sorce of contention in Lewiston for a decade.  If he can’t be more artful or precise with his words, then maybe politics is not the business for him.

          3. No further info being reported in BDN. I do not read the SunJournal.  The mayor has spoken the truth but as usual, it was taken out of text and it snowballed.  Skin color does not matter, what matters is how we treat each other.

          4. Bradygirl, do you live in an area that has been overrun by the somalians?
do you work where they frequent?
            What was stated is true.
they are impatient and extremely rude. they don’t like waiting for anything, especially free goods/services.
in fact, a while ago, a somali driving a mercedes suv got impatient waiting for school buses to move so she slammed on the gas, hit 6 cars, and ran over a 16 year old girl.
they are unbelievably rude and should all be shipped back to the hellhole they came from.

            http://www.sunjournal.com/city/story/1062174

          5. I live in a place with more minorities than you can imagine.  Probably more in a 10 square mile radius than in the entire state of Maine (I am not joking).  Having grown up in Maine and knowing that fairly monochromatic world and comparing it to where I live now, all I can say is that there are plenty of rude white folks, impatient drivers who are white, etc…along with all races.  You are focusing only on what re-enforces your pre-conserved notions and makes you feel better about yourself.
Seriously, no white person has ever done something stupid behind the wheel because they were impatient?  Is that your point?
Also, do you only post on this site when issues of race come up?

          6. okay, so you don’t live in lewiston, and you most likely don’t live in Maine.
how can you comment on the happenings there if you haven’t seen what’s been happening?
have you spoken with any of the residents of lewiston?
any of the people that work in the area?

          7. Correct.  However I grew up here, my family lives here and am in the state many times a year (hence, my interest in civic issues such as this one).  My comments to you are based on the question you asked me, which I think I am qualified to answer.

Also, is it not unbelievably rude to suggest that people should be “shipped back to a hellhole?”

          8. “I grew up here”
            when was that?
it’s only gotten this bad in the past 10 years or so.

so, come back here soon, and walk through lewiston at night sometime. make sure you carry some mace.

  4. There was a time when people migrated to America to become an American citizen, to learn and embrace American ways, traditions and culture, to take advantage of American freedoms, philanthropy, prosperity, charity & the American flag while learning the Pledge of Allegiance…..not leaving their own ways and culture behind but putting American interests first and adapting their new lifestyles to be American in their hearts and ways while holding their own culture and ways along-side…..they would go thru the proper process of becoming a naturalized citizen thus earning their respective citizenship……this was when America was a true melting pot….different cultures, skin colors and beliefs combined but the end result was American….now people want to immigrate illegally, for-go their responsibility to legally be declared, instead of praising America and her ways they want to replace American with what-ever label they come with….they reserve the right to burn our flag, spit on American culture and tradition, replace what their fore-father’s who came previously embraced with indifference and intolerance and hatred….Crazy that America and American’s have allowed this to even be an issue, IMHO….this is America…..

  5. I have often seen people come to an area, not even immigrants, because they loved the area and what it represented.  Some were not there long and wanted changes to what they were used to in their previous environment.  I believe Lewiston has gone above and beyond what the Somalis want or need.  If  I moved to this area there wouldn’t be all the perks for my family because we were already here.  There isn’t fairness shown to the local people who need help.

    1. Exactly. We live and pay into a system our entire lives only to see what we worked for freely handed out to people from other nations who never paid one dime into the system. This is not right nor is it fair. It does not help and only causes more racism.

        1. French Canadians had their own French language newspapers and schools for decades in Maine.  Their churches were burned down by the Klan, and Anglo Americans didn’t want to have anything to do with them.  You make it pretty clear that you’re desperately trying to be Klan-lite yourself.

          1.  I always tell people you think the KKK was racist in the south (and they were no doubt)…the klan in maine hated whites !

theres a picture of a hoodless parade in milo somewhere floating around

  6. In resent decades folks have come to the US either legally or illegally because they have neither the will nor the courage to change circumstances in their own home land. Our country is an easy out for them. To then refer to the folks giving them a free fresh start as “divisive” and “racist”, leads me to believe it’s time for those offended to return to their previous problems (found in their homelands) and fix those first.

    1. 14 THUMBS UP – You almost have it right- Thank you!!! Like I have seen it said somewhere — I Speak English — I Should NOT have to PRESS 1 FOR ENGLISH when I call somewhere

        1. Incrementalism, baby….incrementalism.  It’s an effective technique, isn’t it??
          Do you grasp the concept?

          1. You’re just excusing a stupid comment. The comment didn’t speak about incrementalism, or the fact that having to press 1 for English leads to a million other things. It was a big baby whining about the fact that some people speak other languages and the burden of having to press an extra button on the phone.

      1.  you have the option to hang up and take your business elsewhere instead of complaining about it…

  7. Here’s an example of what immigrants are given on arriving here.  About 7 or 8 years ago I worked in an office and dealt with an elderly gentleman who needed car insurance.  He was from Russia and had just arrived here.  He was in his late 70’s.  He had a son who had come to America a few years before and he came here to be with him.  I do not know if this is accurate but it is what he told me.  He was given $10,000 to buy a car with from the  US government was how he worded it.  I asked him how he would live here as he was supposed to be quite poor and brought  nothing with him from Russia.  He advised that he was going to receive social security.  I asked whether he had every worked in the US and he said no as he had just arrived here.
How many of us have received $10,000 to help us buy a car?  No wonder social security is in trouble if we dole out the money to people who arrive here and have never paid into the system.  I realize I could never verify what he told me but I do believe him as he had no reason to lie to me.  I have never got over this as now I am retired and living on a meager social security which I paid into since I was 15 years old.  Something needs to change.

  8. All he has to do is say, “see?? This is EXACTLY what I was talking about.  Thank you for providing the best possible argument for my statement”, in response to these two groups’ actions.

  9. I think we should all go back to our Puritan background.  Anyone who is not practicing Puritan beliefs should go back to where they came from……..oh wait, no one practices Puritan culture anymore.  Times change.  America is a place where everyone should feel comfortable practicing their own religion and observing their own beliefs and cultures.  If you don’t like people who are “different” than you are, America is not for you.

  10. This Group can go fly a  kite!! The Mayor hit the nail right on the head… The Salami’s think they can come in here & AUTOMATICALLY get EVERYTHING  Full Food stamps & $1600 a month SSI  They are transients They stay here until there initial benis run out & then move.. but the main problem is they are breeding like rabbits! When Catholic Charities moved the first 300 here that opened the flood gates there are now over 3500 of them here.. and Downtown Lewiston has turned into Little Mogadishu. NONE of them carry insurance on the ” Community vans” as they all say it belongs to someone else.

Ok I’m off my Soap box.. but the facts are the facts

    1. The truth can be depressing sometimes,

but you can either face the facts and make an informed decision, or choose to believe what you’re told to believe by the liberals.

    2. Yes, this is Maine, where a lot of dumb, racist rednecks get elected to office and comment on the BDN.  It is what it is.

  11. Word police at it again…  It seems only the Somali’s enjoy true freedom here.  The mayor must be muzzled.  As he is the one with power, he must choose his words carefully as not to offend anyone.

I am SO sick of PC bull!

  12. don’t cave on this one if you do it won’t be long before someone else goes down the tubes for their expression.

  13. Several years ago I joined the Maine Peoples Alliance.  When I realized I was supporting communism I ended my membership.

  14. The first language of New York City was Dutch;  along came the immigrant English and the Dutch culture and language was replaced by English; in the 1840’s along came the Irish and the politics, culture of Anglican English was pushed aside by Catholicism and democratic/union politics lead by Tammany Hall.  The German’s and the Jews slowly mingled and the City became what it is today…a great city with a little added southern blacks and Puerto Rican Latinos added.

Boston grew for a Puritan stronghold to an Anglican run aristocracy until those Irish appeared and turned it into a blue collar, union catholic stronghold…ouch.

Lewiston Maine started as an English dominated little city until the French arrived to take as many jobs as they could in the mills….French was the 1st language of its citizens for generations in the English speaking Maine and USA…now the Somalians are coming with their language and their culture.  Like the French before them in Lewiston and the Irish in Boston and New York, they will eventually meld into the melting pot…give them a chance.

  15. Several years ago I joined the Maine Peoples Alliance.  When I realized I was supporting communism I ended my membership.

  16. Nothing wrong in asking for any culture to leave their guns and violence at the door. If one notes, it was the Pirates of Somalia that killed and held so many for ransom. I believe its best to get it out as soon as possible as to what is expected from all our citizens in case, some did not know or approve. In certain area’s and ever expanding , we now have The Russian mafia, The Jamaican Posse’s and the list goes on and on. We need it all to cease………….and everyone needs to live by respect and the law of OUR CULTURE outside of the home.

  17. Bob MacDonald is  ignorant bigoted loudmouth from Mass. that barely won an election against a dead man.

The voters of Lewiston will deal with him when he is up for re-election.

    Yessah

  18. hav you noticed almost the majority of
crimes in maine are done by…irish people
take at look at the surnames of criminals in maine,
    they are often  irish surnames

maine is the botany bay for Ireland as Australia
is the botany bay for england

  19.     I called the Mayor’s office to inform him that he has the SUPPORT and GOOD WILL
of a great many of us PROUD to BE AMERICAN citizens…    I hope he has the stamina
and courage to survive this…    “THEY” crucified the last mayor for speaking out.
Kudos and prayers for courageous , stand up leaders like Mr. MacDonald and
Gov. LePage……..    The democrats do their ‘thing’….   ONLY FOR THE VOTES !!!!
