LEWISTON, Maine — Shots were fired at River Valley Village on Friday night, and the search is on for the gunman.

Residents said someone opened fire at about 5 p.m. in the area of 45 Tall Pines Drive, Apartment 10. Shell casings were scattered across the parking lot out front and residents clutched their children, wondering who the intended target might have been.

Nobody was hurt. Police were interviewing people in the apartments near where the shooting occurred.

Several residents pointed out that there are several young children and babies living in the apartment complex, formerly known as Tall Pines.

Witnesses reported seeing a pair of men drive up in a small, silver car before fleeing just moments after firing at the apartment house.

“I heard gunshots and I thought, ‘Oh God, what was that?’” said Kimberly Davenport, who lives on the other side of the parking lot. She was holding her 10-month-old son, who was awakened by the blasts and the subsequent commotion.

“I heard a lot of yelling,” she said. “Then my baby woke up and I had to go.”

Police cordoned off a corner of the parking lot as the investigation got under way. Several people were interviewed, and police in the area were told to be on the lookout for a silver Dodge Neon last seen speeding away from the area. The occupants were said to be armed and dangerous.

Amber O’Leary said the car pulled up at about 5 p.m. A pair of men got out and walked down the street.

“Within a couple seconds, I heard gunshots,” she said.

Moments later, the suspects ran back to the car and drove off.

By nightfall, police were still searching for suspects, and a detective was called to investigate. Police said they have leads pointing to the identities of the suspect, who remained at large late Friday.

The people who live near the shooting scene said they will have trouble sleeping, not knowing who fired the shots and whether they will return. Davenport held her son and watched the police gathering evidence.

“This,” she said, “will be interesting to put in his first-year scrapbook.”

  1. From the Report . . . .

“Witnesses reported seeing a pair of men drive up in a small, silver car before fleeing just moments after firing at the apartment house. . .

Amber O’Leary said the car pulled up at about 5 p.m. A pair of men got out and walked down the street.”

The article gives no other description.  Huh? Are we suppose to just imagine?

Well, it would seem that witness and Amber could probably tell us if they were white men, black men, red men, or yellow men…. (or perhaps red martians) and I bet they could tell us if they were 5′-2″ or 6′-5″, and I bet they could say if they weighed 120 lbs or 340 lbs, and maybe even a thing or two about what they were wearing……

Where’s the detail Mr. Reporter?  Don’t you ask questions? Or is it too politcally incorrrect to report facts anymore?  You report a silver car, but fail to give a hint of the color of the skin?  Ok folks, look for a silver car!

  2. From the article: “This,” she said, “will be interesting to put in his first-year scrapbook.”

Why would you even think about placing such a thing in his scrapbook?
