Holden man arrested after allegedly assaulting mother

HOLDEN, Maine — A 23-year-old Holden man was arrested early Saturday morning after he allegedly became irate at his mother — who was trying to evict him and his girlfriend — and got into a physical tussle with her.

Michael Nickerson, who was charged with domestic violence assault, domestic violence criminal threatening and domestic violence criminal mischief, was released on bail on Monday, Holden police Sgt. Eugene Fizell said.

Among the conditions of his release are that he not have contact with his mother or return to her home, Fizell said.

According to Fizell, the series of incidents that led to Nickerson’s arrest began shortly after midnight on Friday, when Nickerson’s mother’s neighbors at Cedar Haven Mobile Home Park called police to report a family fight.

Nickerson reportedly became enraged because his mother, 48, wanted him and his girlfriend to move out after having lived there for about six weeks, Fizell said.

“They had basically overstayed their time and welcome,” Fizell said.

Fizell said that among other things, Nickerson broke his mother’s screen door, pulled her outside and began a physical struggle on the lawn outside her home. He also attempted to choke her, Fizell said, adding that the mother defended herself by scratching at his face and eyes.

Fizell said that Nickerson also smeared a chocolate-dipped vanilla ice cream cone over the windshield of his mother’s car and smashed his electronic keyboard into pieces.

Besides Fizell, police from nearby Brewer and a Penobscot County sheriff’s deputy assigned to Orrington turned up at the residence.

Nickerson’s girlfriend was not charged in connection with the incident, the sergeant said.

He also is accused of throwing a socket wrench at a side window of her home.

Brewer police located Nickerson about 3 a.m. on Wilson Street, Fizell said.

Nickerson’s mother declined to be taken to the hospital, against the advice of police, Fizell said.

According to court listings from the Bangor Daily News archives, Nickerson was fined $100 in May for unlawful possession of a scheduled drug.

In August of last year, he was fined $500, sentenced to three days in jail and had his license suspended for 90 for operating a motor vehicle while under influence of intoxicants. Also at that time he was fine $250 for failing to stop, remain and provide information to police.
