BANGOR, Maine — Recently, Bangor Daily News readers voiced their opinions on a traffic light at the intersection of Broadway and Stillwater Avenue on the See It, Fix It feature on the BDN website.
Now, readers are turning their attention to another busy intersection in that part of town, as two readers have reported issues at the four-way intersection of Stillwater and Essex Street.

In regard to the Essex-Stillwater intersection, readers have reported problems with the left-hand turn light in the northbound lane of Stillwater.
Bangor Public Works director Dana Wardwell recently acknowledged that his department has received numerous complaints about that intersection. The roads at the intersection are at a diagonal angle.
The stop bar at the intersection is also far back from the crosswalk, and if vehicles don’t pull all the way up to it, the cycle of the lights takes longer.
Plenty of other issues were noticed by readers, as well. They include a pothole at a railroad crossing on Route 15 in Orrington; speeding drivers on North Street in Houlton, a 25-mph zone; lane marker signs at the intersection of Griffin Road and Kenduskeag Avenue in Bangor; a street light on Third Street in Auburn; and a traffic light at the intersection of Kelly Road and U.S. Route 2 in Orono.
While we’re at it, can Bangor/Brewer PD actually _do_ something about people who jay-walk against the light through entire intersections..holding up vehicles and snarling the flow of traffic. On two occasions in as many weeks I’ve seen people pull the “I’m on foot so I win” mentality and just stride into oncoming traffic. Yesterday it was a man and woman w/ baby carriage at the Brewer-side of the Bangor Brewer bridge. They decided to walk diagonally through the intersection, with no crosswalk, AGAINST the light…with mom flipping people off if they so much as looked impatient. I won’t go into the part where the stroller got caught on the tracks and they took their sweet time freeing it (and slamming the stroller on the pavement in the process…with the child still attached).
Brewer PD cruiser watched the entire thing happen, and he just drove off. Meanwhile most of us had to sit through an entire green-light watching these people break multiple laws (and put themselves and their child in danger)…while the cop just went on his way.
There is so much wrong w/ the road layout in Bangor and Brewer…we don’t need people on foot screwing it up worse because they know nothing will happen if they break pedestrian laws.
According to Mr. Nutting you can’t go around arresting every one .
Haha not looking for an arrest…just an upholding of laws that have been on the books for decades. I read so much about bad driver behavior…yet you never ever see anyone getting in trouble for breaking pedestrian laws.
How often do you see a person getting arrested for causing a motorcycle crash with injury ?
I witnessed one, stuck around for the police report, made sure to let them know the person was 1) drunk 2) had a kid in the car 3) was on the cell phone so yeah….I’ve seen it first hand and did my part to help make sure the person paid the price for cleaning out an elderly couple while they were on a motorcycle.
My motorcycle accident i had 2 people saw it an told the cop i did nothing wrong but let her go because she had to much trama at the seen an did not want to put her thru any more . When i told Mr Nutting he told me “we can’t go around arresting every one ” i told him that the cost of my accident was 40,000 . He said “It makes no diffrence we can’t go around arresting every one ” . He said “thats what we got courts for “
I watched an Asian couple try crossing the road at State and Broadway by Family Dollar this afternoon, couldn’t be bothered to push a button, so they wait until our lanes turn green and try crossing in front of thru traffic, as soon as they almost got run over they quickly backed up to the curb….can’t believe how lazy people are to even push a button.
Why does it matter that they were Asian?

That is what I was thinking, because at the time of this article 2 people have complained about one of the many traffic lights in Bangor and it warrants a story. We get it from the last article, the city of Bangor thinks it is a drivers fault why the lights take so long to change, when it is not. It is the programming it is the timing, and unless BPW can tell the BDN they fixed the timing on their lights, same story, different day for Bangor traffic.
Still waiting for them to fix the major back up problem with lights on Broadway by Rite Aid ….
