BANGOR, Maine — A New Sharon man waived indictment Wednesday in U.S. District Court and pleaded guilty to possession of stolen firearms, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Roger G. Briscoe, 33, admitted that he broke into a Jay residence on Jan. 26 and stole 19 guns, an orange chainsaw, a laptop computer and a container of change, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said Wednesday in a press release.
The circumstances of Briscoe’s arrest are not detailed in court documents. He was in the Franklin County Jail on Jan. 27, according to court documents. Until entering his plea on the federal charge Wednesday, Briscoe was in state custody.
Information on state charges he may be facing was not available late Wednesday.
Briscoe appears to have been identified as a suspect early in the investigation. His home was searched after the victim told police he had sent a text message to Briscoe’s girlfriend the previous evening saying he would be working overnight.
At the home of Briscoe’s girlfriend, officers recovered guns from a closet, under a mattress, under a bed and in a nightstand, according to the prosecution version of events to which he pleaded guilty. The victim’s chain saw was found in a pickup truck owned by Briscoe’s girlfriend.
Most of the firearms were recovered, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
Briscoe faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
A sentencing date has not been set.
Not too bright on the victims part to tell the burglers girlfriend that the house would be vacant all night. But hope they throw the book at Mr. Briscoe on the fed charges to help deter others from trying the same thing. And wonder why no charges for the girlfriend?? She had to know about the stolen stuff in her house and pick-em-up truck.
