AUGUSTA, Maine — In 2011, a new state law that established a cut-off date for accepting absentee ballot requests became effective. Requests for absentee ballots for no cause must be received by the town or city clerk by the close of business on Thursday, Nov. 1.

Voters may register at their local town office until Election Day, and at their polling place on Election Day. Beginning on Oct. 17, voter registration applications must be submitted to the registrar in person.

To register to vote, proper identification and proof of residency must be provided. Any questions regarding elections or voter registration should be directed to local town or city officials.

  1. Your story omits an important fact.  Although the REQUEST for an absentee ballot must be received by the city or town clerk by Thursday, November 1, the voter has until 8 pm on Election Day, November 6 to return the actual ballot to the clerk.  With all the confusion about absentee voting this year, it’s worth repeating some deadlines not everyone will know.
