BANGOR, Maine — The owners of Union Street Citgo signed up for a promotion funded by a conservative political action committee to provide 150 customers with gas at $1.84 a gallon. On Wednesday, drivers eager to save a buck got into a line that stretched for half a mile.

“It is completely nonpolitical,” gas station owner Sarah Wardwell said as she washed a customer’s windshield. “It’s a chance to offer our customers a great price on gas.”

The gas price rollback was sponsored by Americans for Prosperity-Maine, a chapter of the conservative political action committee composed of activists “who advocate and promote limited government, lower taxes and more freedom,” the chapter’s website states.

The group said the reduced price per gallon paid by customers in Bangor on Wednesday is what residents paid for gas when President Barack Obama took office in 2009.

“Here in Maine, President Obama’s failing green energy policies have us counting every penny and putting America deeper into debt,” Carol Weston, Maine state director for the group, said in a statement posted on the website. “That’s why we’re offering reduced price gas this Wednesday, to help and give a voice to the countless Mainers who oppose the policies of this administration.”

In 2008, gas prices in the U.S. topped $4 a gallon — with the peak in July 2008 of $4.11 a gallon — but dropped dramatically to a national average of $2.40 a gallon on Election Day and to about $1.84 when Obama was inaugurated on Jan. 20, 2009, according to Consumer Reports.

Three of the 150 people who got gas on Wednesday — Bangor residents Janice Martinez, Joelle Milliken and Jay Stanhope — were thrilled to take advantage of the low-price offer. All three were driving by and noticed the red illuminated sign that read $1.84.

“I’m stoked,” said Martinez, who waited about an hour to fill up. “I would have waited five hours.”

“We were going to my house, which is right over there and saw the line,” Milliken said. “We thought, ‘What is this line for?’ Then we saw the price.”

Stanhope’s big Chevy truck typically costs $70 to fill and he spends about $30 a day running it for his job, he said.

“This is bigger than most states,” he joked about his gas-guzzler.

On Wednesday, he and everyone else in line got 15 gallons of gasoline for $27.74.

“They’re saving $30 on 15 gallons,” said Wardwell. “People work week to week, so saving $30 is huge.”

Because customers’ cars were snaked down the side of Union Street, past the city pool, police officers stopped by the gas station to see how long the promotion would last, Wardwell said. It started at noon and ended just before 3 p.m.

The 150 local Union Street Citgo customers saved a bundle.

“They saved about $3,500,” said Nate Wardwell, a co-owner of the gas station.

The current price for gas is just shy of $3.80 a gallon, he said.

            As President, Bush could have vetoed any legislation that Congress brings to him.  So even if Democrats controlled Congress, and lead the charge to destroy the economy (which they didn’t) he could have vetoed.  But he didn’t.

The employment growth the economy has shown over the last 3 years is a piddling amount and has not even covered population growth much less the millions that have left employment rolls and are no longer counted as unemployed. Obama has put millions on food stamps and millions more on permanent disability. Hardly signs of a booming economy.

          Normally recoveries are “V” shaped, as dramatic on the upswing as they were on the down. Example: Clinton had two months consecutive months of 800k Job growth 1.6 million new jobs and Obama jumps up and down with 114K. You don’t have a recovery so bad unless you don’t know what you are doing.

          Domestic Oil production increased on federal lands only because Bush approved federal leases on new wells that generally take 3 years to go online. Obama has approved ZERO federal oil leases on federal land since taking office. The current increase in domestic oil production is due to the Bush oil policy which Obama has tried to slow down.

           Bush ended the Iraq war not Obama. All Obama did was go through with signed agreements already in place when he took office. Obama did nothing.

          The doubling of the Dow is purely because of the Federal Reserve Quantitative Easing policy. The growth in the Dow is not organic in nature but merely a false asset bubble because of that policy. It is all smoke and mirrors and when that asset bubble collapses lots of people are going to get hurt and there will be even higher unemployment as a result. ( I don’t mind though as anyone that is a market watcher is making money, but as I said its a false bubble.)

The strength of the stock markets indicates the investors, ie the big money, believe it is going to continue to improve. The housing market has just shown an improvement also. It would be foolish to go back to the policies which got us into this position to begin with, which is what Romeny appears to want to do. Even some of Reagan’s advisers are saying that Romney’s policies will not work, and in fact will make it worse. As I have said before, Obama is not perfect, or even great, but his policies are slowly bringing us out of the recession. I did not support his candidacy and do not like some of his policies, but certainly do not want to return to the wars and giveaways that the last administration was known for.

            1) Financial regulations that constrain small business borrowing.

            2) High Energy Costs

            3) Low housing values.

          13. Low housing values and lack of lending as well as high energy costs are certainly causes. Obama has pushed fewer regulations that GW Bush, but remember it was in part due to lax regulations on the financial markets that got us here to begin with.
            I would add crooked bankers and brokers were also a major factor. And one of the things I am disappointed in from the Obama administration is the lack of prosecutions of crooked financiers.

          14.  Financial regulations are not only aimed at big banks and Wall st. The financial regulation bill was also aimed directly at funding mechanisms of small business.

            Example: I own commercial property out right. My banker tells me that I cannot borrow against that building to start a second non-related business. I asked why and she mouthed the words “FinReg”. That means a person I had intended to hire is not working.

            The funding mechanism that helped small business in the past no longer exist. When you think of Fin Reg don’t concern yourself with the bankers themselves on Wall Street. They are fine. The problem lies with how that law was applied to small guys.

          19. Those things you attribute to Obama he just simply did not do. Oil production was Bush oil policies come to fruition years later. It takes a minimum of three years to go through the production licensing process for each new oil well. Obama did not do that. . We will likely face a drop in new oil coming online over the next few years because of that.

            The growth in the Dow has nothing to do with the growth of the businesses that make it up as would normally be the case in a stock rise. The stock value is rising not because the underlying value of the companies has grown. It is because of the excess money laying around as a result of quantitative easing. The Fed (and presumably Obama) hope the companies will put this money to work. That hasn’t happened. That’s why the Fed has promised another $30 billion per month until employment rises. Business loves it.

          21. The Agreement that ended US military involvement in Iraq was negotiated by Condi Rice and was signed in Iraq on November 17, 2008. The Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zebari and U.S. ambassador Ryan Crocker signed the agreement in an official ceremony.

            Obama had nothing to do with that.

            Actually the Fed is responsible for the QE1,2 & 3. There will be repercussions. When stocks rise for reasons other than underlying value they crash eventually. Sometimes they take people jobs with them.

            I don’t think I excused Bush from any of his failings.

Corporate profits are at record highs (as is CEO compensation).  Large firms are sitting on trillions in cash reserves.  As inflation is historically low, you can’t just blame the Fed for printing money.  Companies are investing overseas due to cheap labor costs, so the high profits on Wall Street are not “tricking down” to Main Street.  That is why further tax cuts on cap gains or high end earners will not accomplish much.  The Dow numbers are more than a mirage.
             
            If there is a blowback, it will not be due to any actions of the Fed, or the fundamentals on Wall Street.  It will be the damaging effects of the sequester taking place in Jan 2013 that will pull hundreds of billions of dollars out of the economy in almost every innovative section you can think of.  The President is and has been willing to compromise things he believes in in order to reach a deal….maybe the right wing can learn to compromise just a touch as well?

(finreg)  People are not being hired. The Fed pumping money into the system in order to move employment numbers is folly. Stock prices love it…. But business fundamentals remain the same.             If business has so much money why does the Fed find it necessary to prime the system?

            As for compromise. Obama threw that baby out with the bathwater 2 months into his administration when he told Republican leadership (effectively) that he didn’t need them.

Higher gas prices means greater demand for oil. So the fact that gas prices went up is actually an indication that the economy picked up. When the economy picks up oil prices do not go down, they go up because demand for them increases and more stuff is on the move. So pointed out low gas prices to bash Obama does the exact opposite, it just points out the fact that when he came into office we were a mess. 

      4. I quit a crappy second part-time job in 2007 because gas was well over $3.50 a gallon so I was burning more getting there than I was making.

        A sitting president (either party) has very little to do with gas prices.  He just makes a convenient ‘target’ for people who like to rant about what they can’t control.  I say that about both Obama and Bush.

  5. Ridiculous. The only reasons gas prices were low in the month Obama took office was because investors were scared the economy was really tanking. If you look at the graph, you can see that it was only that low for a week or so before jumping right back up to the $3-4 a gallon it was for the six months previous in 2008.

  6. As the President said during the debate, gas was 1.84 in 2009 because the economy had collapsed, which slashed demand for oil products.  It had nothing to do with any energy policy.

    Even if we started drilling in every conceivable location in this country tomorrow, all OPEC and other oil producing countries would do is reduce their production to keep prices stable.  There might be other reasons to increase oil drilling, but it will not reduce prices.

    1. ?  If we started drilling here at home, why would we care what the hell OPEC’s prices were.  We wouldn’t by buying what they were selling.  The US of A is sitting on more oil than all the saudi nations put together.  It ABSOLUTELY would reduce prices.  Duh!

      1. Oil is a limited resource. We need a leader who understands this and searches for alternatives rather than just worrying about the present day situation. Whether its 100 years or 1,000 years from now, if we don’t invest in green energy, we’re screwed.

      2. Well no, because OPEC controls so much oil production. They reduce Production price goes up. It does not matter how much we drill here. The oil isn’t going to stay in the USA anyways. It will go to the highest Bidder. We do not get a lot of our oil for outside countries, but OPEC, countries that have gotten together to control oil production determine how much they will produce. 

      3. Since oil is an internationally traded (and priced) commodity, and since the oil companies are not under any obligation to sell it here, they will most likely sell to the highest bidder.
        The amount of oil produced has nothing to do with the price of gas at the pump, according to one study which looked at 36 years of records.

      4. Even if we started drilling more at home, it would take a decade or more to build up the infrastructure we’d need to extract, transport and process the petroleum. 

      5. We are already producing the most oil since 1997. The oil companies are not under any obligation to sell in the US. Since we do not have a state owned oil producer and refiner, like most other countries do,  they can sell to the highest bidder. Naturally the right wing would scream if part of the drilling permits required them to sell part of their oil in the US.
        OPEC is not our main or even a major supplier, Canada is.
        The problem at the pump is not the supply of oil, but the lack of sufficient number of processing plants, which have not been increased for nearly 30 years. That is why, when Katrina shut down refineries in the south, and the recent fire occurred in California, the price at the pump increased. Just the threat of a hurricane sends the price up.
        A 36 year study showed no correlation between the amount of oil produced and the price of gas. The main driver of prices are the speculators and institutional investors, which in turn are influenced by the threat of war, or some economic problem in some other country, etc.

His purchase at the wrong time caused an even greater (short term) price rise. So yes, he did add to the cost of gasoline, but that was an unusual case. Releasing some of the oil from the national reserve, as has been done on occasion, will reduce the price of oil for the short term only. The price of oil, and therefore refined products, is determined by the international commodities market.

    2. For the first 9 months of 2012 the inflation rate has been an average of 2.14%. Excluding 2009 when we actually had deflation (-.4%), the inflation rate under Obama has been 2.31%.
      One source I looked at states the ideal inflation rate should be between 2-3%. According to that source slight inflation is needed in order to promote economic growth. Zero inflation, or stagnation, is almost as bad as deflation.
      Under GWBush the average inflation rate was 2.8%. I’m not sure what you consider “rampant inflation”, but both figures seem low to me.

  13. Dumb move. You just lost a regular customer and everyone I can tell about this. There is nothing nonpolitical about the statement you just made by selling gas at this price which attempts to emphasis the mistakenly presumed failings of our President. 

    I highly suggest people who purchased gas today educate themselves about the historical price of gas under the Bush administration, the facts regarding this low price (only lasted about a week after skyrocketing for months) and how gas prices are actually controlled.

I’ve bought all my gasoline…tuneups…inspections, etc., there for 15 years…No more…I’ll find another gas station.  You can’t blame Obama for gas prices….How about Bush?….Before Bush and Cheney declared Saddam to be evil Saddam had promised to sell all the  gas/oil the US wanted for $29 a barrel.  Bush and Cheney figured they could get if for free by invading and stealing the oil….Remember even Tom Brokaw said the war would be over in a week.  So far it’s cost us $2 trillion and counting…….2.2 million dollars a minute  for Iraq and Afghanistan….

      With China and India, among others, becoming major industrial economies, they will need an energy supply. Even though China is working very hard to build sustainable alternative energy methods, for now they must buy oil on the world market, which will keep the demand and price high. As their industry expands it will only get worse. If, on the other hand, their economies were to contract to the point they reduced their need for oil, it would mean another recession or depression, which would effect the entire world economy.

    Interesting name for the group–what they want is THEIR prosperity, the heck with the rest of us.  If they have to lie, cheat and STEAL to win that’s ok with them.

Well I guess I will reiterate what i ACTUALLY told the reporter from the BDN instead of what she chose to write.  For OUR STATION, this promotion was completely non-political.  Obviously, the group that provided the funding had a political agenda but in the end, their sponsering of this saved 150 people some of their hard earned money and that was our goal!!  We do not support either political party.  I know there are some that won’t believe this, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I just wanted to state what my thoughts were going into this.  If any organization approached us and wanted to do something like this that could save our community a big chunk of money like this, we would have done it.  Maybe some don’t realize this, but saving $30 on a fill up was HUGE for a lot of people and we were very happy to help make this happen for them!!  So I apologize for those who feel that our vote was “bought”, or that we were “robbed of our integrity”, but I feel good about what we did and for those that we could help out!

  29. I quit a crappy second part-time job in 2007 because gas was well over $3.50 a gallon so I was burning more getting there than I was making.

    A sitting president (either party) has very little to do with gas prices. He just makes a convenient ‘target’ for people who like to rant about what they can’t control. I say that about both Obama and Bush.

    This whole exercise was pointless Union St. Citgo, but oh well…it’s your dime.  I hope this “nonpartisan” (oh hardy har har) group helped you pay for your $ loss or at you can at least write it off on your taxes.

  31. I bought gas at $4.29 a gal. when Bush was Prez….So which is it Rs? When gas drops, you claim Obama had nothing to do with it. When gas goes up, you claim it’s all his fault.

    In any event, lemme fill ya in on a little secret: If you’re a millionaire, vote for the Dem. If you’re a billionaire, vote for the Rep. If you’re neither, then either stay home or vote for someone else.

  35. Hmm…prices rose under Bush it was HIS fault. Prices rise under Obama and it is BUSH’S fault. When prices rose under Bush who controlled the house and senate? Oh…dems did? When prices rose under Obama who controlled the house and senate AND the presidency? Oh..the dems? Yep, our community organizer snowed all his sheep and claimed HE KNEW HOW and WOULD make all things hunky dory again. Now the sheep are saying not fair, he has done wonders. He couldn’t socialize enough in just 4 years and he just needs to find new things to blame his incompetency on. The sheep HOPE he gets 4 more years so he can CHANGE the amount they get for food stamps, get their tuition paid for, get free contraceptives, free obamaphones, free obamastash, get free homes, and NEVER have to work. The rich will pay for it all. Thankfully many of the ex-sheep have woken up and know they were snowed, caught up with the media hype and build up over our new savior. The teleprompter pres is the most out of his league pres even besting Jimmy Carter. What is even more amazing, sheep still bleat and I think it is because they can’t admit they made a very big mistake.

  37. When bush was in Office I paid 2 dollars less per gallon. which put an additional 120 dollars a month in my bank account. What can you pay for with 120 a month? cell phone for a family of three, best cable and internet. auto insurance for a family of 3.
    Imagine  the  Electric company  saying hey we are going to charge you $120.00 more per month, you would be screaming.

  41. The oil cartels contol prices. If you drilled all over the country and the oil cartel reduces production the price per gallon stays high. It is a global market. Anyone who thinks Romney will fill their tank at a loss after the election is dreaming. When an american oil  company drilling here can get more by selling oil to China you won’t have any of it.  No president controls global supply and demand. Get real
