It’s not every week that I wish for the opportunity to do an extra column.

This, however, was one of those weeks.

I got a bit worked up Monday evening when it broke that a judge had ruled the Kennebunk Police Department could release the names, and just the names, of the alleged clients of accused prostitute Alexis Wright.

“They can’t be serious,” I said rather loudly to my husband.

I thought it was so absurd that I laughed out loud, but quickly became outraged when I realized that some news media outlets actually were printing the list.

The Bangor Daily News and Maine’s other large daily papers chose not to print the list until more identifying information, such as the ages and residences of the johns, were released.

The media outlets that did publish the list had the right to do so, of course, but their decision was as misguided as Superior Court Justice Thomas Warren’s.

The initial list contained no age, no place of residency to more clearly identify the accused. Just a name.

One was Donald Hill, who we later learned is 52 years old, has the middle initial ‘F’ and lives in Old Orchard Beach.

I know a Don Hill who once was the principal of Newport Elementary School and used to hunt with my kin over in Palmyra.

I always liked him and hoped he hadn’t been so foolish. Of course, I realized it could have been any of the 14 or so Donald Hills listed in the White Pages in Maine.

Of course, it wasn’t him. It was the Kennebunk High School hockey coach, who has since resigned.

Also on the list, released as it was by a couple of weekly papers and some TV stations, was a guy by the name of James Soule, later determined to be James A. Soule, 58, of South Portland, the former mayor of that city. I grew up just a few doors away from a boy named James Soule who, last I knew, was living in the Madison area.

And then, of course, there was poor Paul Main. Reporters began showing up at his Kennebunk home Monday night asking him if he was the same Paul Main who was on “the list.”

He just happens to be retired from the York County Sheriff’s Department, where he headed up the agency’s detective division, so that would have been an interesting story.

But instead it was actually Paul Main, a 43-year-old fellow from Biddeford who allegedly enjoyed the company of Ms. Wright.

Mr. Paul Main of Kennebunk was not pleased about the confusion and was right in his anger that a judge had made such a short-sighted ruling and that certain media outlets opted to print the list of names anyway.

A fellow by the name of James White, later revealed to be Jame P. White, 38, of Buxton, also was on the list as having been summoned for soliciting a prostitute. There are 54 men by the name of James White listed in the White Pages in Maine.

Of course in the light of day on Tuesday, Justice Warren apparently saw things differently and decided that indeed the ages and residences of the men charged also should be released.

And so those who might have been scrambling a bit to assure those around them, like their wives, that they were not “that” James White, were just left with a decent story to tell over coffee the next morning.

Now, of course, the media are gearing up for the second release of names of some other men who allegedly enjoyed Zumba class with Ms. Wright.

This time, I’m sure the release and the publication will go more smoothly, but the fallout at home and at work for the accused will probably be equally upsetting.

On Friday I got an email from a fan — yes, I have one. She lives Down East and appears sensible. She has a wry sense of humor.

Why, she asked, do you suppose all of those men gave Ms. Wright their real name?

Best question I’ve heard all week. I mean, they call them “johns” for a reason, I assume. Sure, it might have been difficult for James Soule, the former South Portland mayor, to be anonymous and perhaps, too, for Jens Bergen, a well-known Kennebunk lawyer.

I wrote back to her.

“You’re absolutely right,” I wrote. “If I was ever to engage a prostitute I would certainly use a false name and pay with cash.”

So many lessons to be learned by media executives, judges and even future johns.

  1. Ahh, the power of the press.  Good news isn’t.  And the News Daily Bangor and the Sussman Press Herald print incorrect and incomplete information all the time, causing tons of nightmares for those of us working in the real world.  Good revelations in this column, though, and perhaps the newspapers will take their own advice.

Oh, and using your darn credit card to pay for Zumba Rumba with your Mr. Happy is not a good idea…..

  2. Your comment about using their real names instead of johns -very,very funny: Obvisouly they were thinking with the wrong piece of anatomy.

  3. I thought the deal was she got their license plate numbers and had her businessman friend run them to reveal identities. Of course some of these fellas have such huge egos that they probably bragged about what important people they are. And this is just the beginning….

  4. Another question I have concerns what happens if Ms. Wright does not eventually cooperate with the prosecution.  As I understand it, the evidence against the “Johns” is in the form of records and videotapes that were seized from Ms. Wright.  If she does not cooperate by testifying against the Johns, will at least some of this evidence be inadmissible at a trial because of the “hearsay” rule?  Also, even if the prosecution manages to get all of this evidence admitted at a trial, will jurors view records created and maintained by a prostitute to be reliable?  Furthermore, with regard to the video recordings, is the prosecution really going to have X-rated videos played in an open court?  In addition, can an argument be made that the video recordings should not be used at trial because the very creation of these videos constituted a crime against the “Johns”?  All in all, will the prosecution  have significant difficulties if Ms. Wright does not cooperate?

    1. “Furthermore, with regard to the video recordings, is the prosecution really going to have X-rated videos played in an open court?”

Yes. It happens all of the time in sex abuse trials with such evidence, as well as in obscenity trials.

    2. Oh she’ll cooperate! In fact she already is. What do you think the meticulous records and tapes were for? ….Insurance!

    3. I agree with what your saying vagraydog but the point of going to trial to beat a $200 fine is not really the issue.
The bigger point is being on the list to begin with.  Guilty or not guilty on the charge is really small potatoes. The divorces and separations due to being on the list will be far more reaching than vindication of being not guilty!!!

  5. If its against the Law, and they are charged, all names should be provided. However, I see nothing wrong with a man and a woman of the proper age (and some lest then that), doing what God has provided. Good stuff. Next.

  6. These guys merely are helping the economy by spending money and they are thrown to the wolves.
The “Crime” they are charged with is a joke. What two “Consenting Adults” do is not the laws business.

    Marry for money = Okay
Sex for a dinner out and a few drinks= okay
Just plain give it away = Okay
Try to make a buck using your own body  (Hey wait…Models do…Adult entertainment people do…atheletes do…) = bad bad bad person.

Who gave others the right to decide what a person does with a body that does not belong to them?
She’s not a criminal and this is a huge waste of tax payer money.
Let her get a tax number and let her be.

What this is really about, they didnt get a share.

      1. Why not? We have gambling (which was okay for the state alone to do) and why not this?(Which my first wife sure did in respect to our marriage) Ever heard of alimony? That is the purest form of paying for sex even after THE SEX STOPS! But thats okay. Thats a legal way to steal..um I mean get money for the use of your body right????
When will primates evolve enough to let go of the past hypocrisy they keep repeating?

        1. Then perhaps LePage should specify prostitution on his Welcome to Maine sign? He could even add a sort of schematic (along the lines of Yield and RR crossing signs) for the benefit of tourists who don’t know English well.

    1. I totally agree. The police department should be ashamed of themselves for wasting taxpayer money on such a minor offense. To release the names was shameful. It great for gossip as they appear to be very bored in Kennebunk.

      1. “bored in Kennebunk.”  Lot of boring going on in Kennebunk apparently…
Very bored in Kennebunk & well beyond, witness these pages & an embarrassing story gone national.  Yeah, national “news.”
It’s always interesting to see the law of unintended consequences in action.  Anyone looking deeper will understand.
So far, the PD, DA, & judge look incompetent.
The “Johns” are being “shamed.”  Many of their lives will take a hit as some already are.   Familys, most importantly innocent children will be “shamed.” Three cheers for that right-on!
Mark Strong won’t go down w/out a fight & spreading the dirt around.
Alexis should get some lucrative offers.  She should employ an agent now.

    1. May of the “johns” were fairly well know in the community.  Using an alias wouldn’t have been an option.

    2. I am convinced the pair were going to blackmail the “Johns”. Why else go to the trouble of seeking so much personal info, plus the video taping? If the trials produce guilty verdicts, these two should move a long way away… after serving sentences.

  7. [ “You’re absolutely right,” I wrote. “If I was ever to engage a prostitute I would certainly use a false name and pay with cash.”

So many lessons to be learned by media executives, judges and even future johns.]

Oops, you’d still be on that oh so embarrassing list unless you also walked to your “Rumba lesson,” because her business partner was identifying the johns by running their cars license plates.

I think the only real lesson to be learned here is don’t break any law that you aren’t prepared to acknowledge in public in front of all your family and friends. For me, that only includes going 9 or 10 miles over the speed limit on I-95, and occasionally turning right on red without coming to a complete stop. Others may have a longer or shorter list, but we all need to be honest with ourselves about what we’re prepared to have known about us, and let that be a guide to our actions.

  8. Hmmm, did we ever get to see the list of “john’s” who frequented Rep. Barney Frank’s buddy’s “prostitution ring” run out of Ol’ Barney’s apartment?

  9. Dear Renee, The “johns” may not have used their real names.  I think you missed the part where Mr. Strong owns a private investigation company and may have used priviledged resources to gain information on the “johns”.

  10. Verification of a “Johns” identity is Standard Operating Proceedure for any “good” Escort after the Craigs List killer incident.

  11. Perhaps the best lesson is “Don’t go to prostitutes” and the way of stopping it is not just arrest the prostitute…but also Shame the johns, if your name is like someone that has been listed, the people that know you and care about you will know It’s not you..

  12. Sounds like: If you have a need to get some on the side, give a false name, (John Doe is always good)pay cash…..seems pretty smart to me. Otherwise go home. I guess that proves that most “Johns” are not thinking with their “Brain”…..What else is new?…..

  13. Renee, I’m really surprised that you do not support the publishing of the johns names.  Seems to me that the BDN regularly prints the names of folks charged with most any infractions.  Why should these charges be treated any differently?

Frankly, not publishing these names smacks of old-style sexism.  Why is it the woman is wrong and her name is plastered in the press, but the men aren’t???   Except for the severity of the punishment, I do not see any difference in this kind of double standard and logic and the logic that allows a woman to be stoned to death for having been raped, yet the man is not even punished.

And for those who do not think that prostitution is no big thing and shouldn’t be a crime – then change the law.

    1. The point is initially, ONLY the names were released, potentially harming unnecessarily the reputations of people with the same name as the actual johns. Newspapers rarely publish the name of someone accused of a crime without further identifying information — address, age, middle initial. That info was not originally provided, which I think was a failure on the part of the judge. I also thought it was funny that one of the Kennebunk police department’s upper administration admonished the public to remember that the accused are innocent until proven guilty. Something tells me they don’t issue the same admonishment for other criminal suspects, and certainly don’t seem to have done so for Wright and Strong.

  14. Reveal all the names.

Captian Kirk and his voyage to go where no man has been before didn’t stop in Kennebunk.
