A New Hampshire man was killed late Tuesday night when he was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer.

Juan Guallpa, 33, of Lempster, New Hampshire, was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Volt north on Interstate 95, near mile marker 157, in Newport about 11:36 p.m. when he stopped in the travel lane, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Guallpa was then hit from behind by a 2021 Freightliner, which pushed the Volt into the median. The tractor-trailer went into the median, where it rolled onto its passenger side and came to a rest across both southbound lanes.

Guallpa died at the scene, Moss said Wednesday morning.

The tractor-trailer’s driver was taken to Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield for treatment of minor injuries.

Police don’t yet know why Guallpa was stopped in the northbound travel lane.

The crash closed I-95 to both north- and southbound traffic. The northbound lanes reopened at 3 a.m., while southbound traffic remained reduced to one lane Wednesday morning.

The cleanup was expected to take eight hours.
