NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine — A shed containing a small greenhouse in New Gloucester was destroyed by fire on Sunday night.

Capt. Scott Doyle of the New Gloucester Fire Department said crews were sent to the scene at 887 Lewiston Road around 8:30 p.m., and when they arrived, the structure was engulfed in flames.

“It was down at that point,” said Doyle.

The 16-by-24-foot shed, which had no power inside it, contained a small greenhouse, Doyle said. The house on the property was just 50 feet away, which could have been disastrous if firefighters had to contend with the kind of winds whipping the state Monday.

“It could’ve been a different situation,” he said.

But on Sunday, the wind was relatively calm while crews battled the blaze.

Oil-covered rags inside the shed likely caused the fire, Doyle said.

Firefighters from neighboring Gray brought in a tanker truck while Poland covered New Gloucester’s station.
