HERMON, Maine — A Hermon man who was upset about losing his job is facing charges after a short joyride in his drag racing car on Wednesday, according to police.

Drinking had cost Christopher Unger, 51, his job recently, according to Deputy Larry Estes of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office, but that didn’t stop Unger from drinking again.

Early Wednesday afternoon, Unger was drinking at his North Street home when he decided to hit the road in a drag racing car that he drives in competitions at Winterport Dragway, according to Estes.

Estes said the car is a 1951 Oldsmobile Cutlass that Unger converted into a drag racing vehicle.

Unger didn’t get far upon leaving his home, crashing into an apple tree in a neighbor’s yard, creating 60 feet of rubber on the roadway in the process, Estes said.

Estes said Unger suffered cuts to his face and was complaining of back pain and was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, Estes said, and Unger’s license had been suspended for a previous operating under the influence charge. The deputy said he’s facing charges of OUI — pending a blood-alcohol test — and operating after suspension.

Unger’s car had about $2,000 worth of damage.

  1. No such thing as a ’51 Olds Cutlass. They didn’t come out until 1961. The one referenced in this article is a ’71.

  2. “The deputy said he’s facing charges of OUI — pending a blood-alcohol test — and operating after suspension.”

What about operating an uninsured, uninspected, unregistered vehicle?  I don’t think it’s typical for a drag racing car to be street legal.

  3. 51 olds LOL I swear they do this crap on purpose just so people will read it and correct them then they can use that to sell ads no one could be this bad at proof reading

    1.  In some ways I feel bad for this guy because he obviously has a major drinking problem and doesn’t even realize it.  At the age of 51 you would think he would be more mature than to do something as stupid as this, alcohol or not. I quit drinking over 4 years ago, after many years of being a functioning alcoholic, and I agree that this is yet another great reminder of why I stopped. I never got and OUI or got arrested for anything but I sure had my share of stupid moments and learned my lesson. Hopefully this is a wake-up call to this man, but unfortunately I have my doubts.  Let’s hope he proves me wrong.

      1. It is extremely sad.  Lost his job due to drinking.  Should have been incentive enough to get some help.  Congratulations to you!

  4. Bet he lived at home with his mommie and/or daddie when he was in his 20-something-years in the 1970s,  like all the drag-racing speedway  20-something-years-olds in Skowhegan do now.

  5. Just as a court ordered restraining order doesn’t keep people away; neither does a court ordered license suspension keep people from operating under the influence charge many other times!

  6. just for information purposes, unger’s home is not on north st in hermon.  he lives in castine with his father.  his vehicle was parked in the garage at north st but he does not live there.
